Newsies is a 1992 film which tells the story of a newsboys' strike in the year 1899 in the city of New York . The genesis of the strike was the refusal of the "New York World" and the "New York Morning Journal" to lower the price of a bundle of newspapers that the newspaper boys, or the Newsies, had purchased to hawk on the street. The two papers then agree to buy all unsold copies of newspapers back from the Newsies.
The film tells this story through Jack Kelly, a newspaper boy. Jack befriends David, a newspaper boy himself, who, along with his younger brother has dropped out of school to sell newspapers. Their father is unable to work because of a broken arm, so it is up to the boys to earn a living selling news papers on the street.
Jack and his new friends find themselves smack in the middle of the strike when the newspaper prices are raised and they are left with unsold stock. The movie was not a great commercial success but there has been a steady fan following and ongoing petitioning by fans to adapt this film into a musical.
