More about Grease
One of the most successful musicals of all time is back! Danny Zuko is back on stage with Grease the musical. Created by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, Grease is a timeless classic which gets its name from the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture which was known as the greasers. Set in 1959 in a fictional, Rydell High, in Chicago , Grease focuses on the romance between two high school students - Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski. They come from two very different worlds and the story tackles social issues as teenage pregnancy and gang violence. The themes of Grease range from love to friendship, teenage rebellion, and sexual exploration. The story starts at the end of summer as two strangers met on a beach and fall in love. All the kids are headed back to school for their last year at Rydell High. Danny is the leader of the cool T-Birds. The T-Birds are a group of guys, Kenickie, Sonny, Roger and Doody, who are only interested in cars and girls. Then there's the new girl in school, Sandy, who doesn't fit in with the popular Pink Ladies, Rizzo, Jan, Marty and Frenchy. As school starts the two strangers on the beach meet again - Sandy and Danny. Sandy is thrilled to see him again but Danny is worried about his reputation because Sandy is a 'good girl'. The T-Birds and Pink Ladies fill up their senior year with love, laugh, and music. The musical's score is a mix of 50's rock and roll and doo-wop. Some of the Greases' most popular songs include 'Summer Nights', 'Greased Lightning', and ' You're the One That I Want'.
Grease first opened on June 7, 1972 at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York where it ran for five months and then moved to the Royale Theatre where it remained for more than seven years before, finally, moving to the Majestic Theatre where it completed its record-setting 3,388-performance run. The original cast included Carole Demas as Sandy and Barry Bostwick as Danny. There have been other actors that have also played the parts including Jeff Conaway, Marilu Henner, Peter Gallagher, Ilene Graff, Judy Kaye, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, Jerry Zaks, and Treat Williams.
Grease became the longest-running Broadway musical in history until A Chorus Line broke its' record. In addition to playing on Broadway, Grease was also a huge hit in London 's West End , a hugely successful film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John, as well as a popular 1994 Broadway revival. In fact in 2007, Grease was nominated for a Tony for Best Revival of a Musical. Tony award winner Kathleen Marshall directs and choreographs this new Broadway production. Grease will have a limited run in Los Angeles so don't miss your chance to see it!
