What is The King and I The Musical about?
The King and I is a musical, the fifth by the team of composer Richard Rodgers and dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II. The King and I is based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, which is in turn derived from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860. The King and I boasts some of the most classic songs of any musical including Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful. The King and I tells the story of the King of Siam and British schoolteacher Anna Leonowens unconventional and tempestuous relationship.
The King and I first hit Broadway in 1951 and has remained one of composer Richard Rodgers and dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II best works to date. Yul Brynner was in the original production of The King and I. The King and I has received numerous awards and accolades including 1952 Tony Award for Best Musical, 1996 Tony Award for Best Revival and 2015 Tony Award for Best Revival.
