The varied blend of sounds as well as the exploration of various musical combinations describes the distinguishing characteristic of The Format.

The band members of The Format consist of Sam Means and Nate Ruess as the leading members.  The two recorded and toured with Mike Schey, Mark ‘townsend’ Buzard, Don ‘the cookie’ Raymond, Sean McCall as well as Toco, who are the other members of The Format.

The band have created spirited, sparkling, and amazing twelve songs, which are a blend of diverse flavors with emphasis on the singers that combine a talent for beatlesque melodies with 80’s styles.  The members are anything but reserved on the musical path that brought them to this point.  Both loves all kinds of music, they wanted to create and write music on their own that lived or died on the power of songwriting and composing.  The music of The Format celebrates that simple declaration from the percolating kick of first single to the snarling pomp of “give it up,” to the heart breaking ballad “on your porch,” it is an essential tour de force of musical styles.  The Beatles, Cat Stevens, and James Taylor are the Format’s influences.  It is easy for them to write songs through an acoustic sound.  Bob Hoag, who is a local musical supporter, offered The Format to lend some technical expertise to a batch of songs they had written.  The First Single (Cause a Scene), is one of the songs which was produced by Hoag with five song demo of The Format.  The song eventually gets into the mix of a local Arizona radio station.  This exposure made the song so popular with local listeners, and the duo, Nate and Sam, soon found themselves in demand as live performers.  By 2002, The Format signed with Elektra Records, enlisting producer Walt Vincent (Pete Yorn, Liz Phair) to work the knobs on The Format’s debut album.

The Format as the band’s name was chosen to make fun of the music industry’s inclination towards a cookie-cutter ‘format’ for a hit.

The band, The Format, has been able to tour performing acoustic shows and polishing their songwriting.  Having their songs out in a real studio as well as recording albums fulfilled most of The Format’s dreams.  The band’s objective is not just to be good performers and songwriters -- but for people to connect with their music.

Sam’s favorite among their songs is the On Your Porch, as well as the Career Day.  The band used to sit around and listen to Nate’s dad record collections, from Fleetwood Mac to Jackson Brown to John Mellencamp.  The band has guarded against making their own songs too polished on Interventions and Lullabies.

Interventions and Lullabies, as The Format’s first studio album, was released in October of 2003 and sold over 80, 000 copies in the United States.  The second album, The Dog Problems was released by 2006, by The Vanity Label Records.
