The Sleepy Jackson acquired its band name from a former drummer who was narcoleptic.  The former members of The Sleepy Jackson are Rodney Aravena, Dan Bull, Justin Burford, Ronan Charles, Jonathan Dudman, Julian Dudman, Matt O’Connor, Jules Cortez, Jesse Steele, Paul Keenan and Ben Nightingale.  On the other hand the current members of The Sleepy Jackson are Luke Steele on guitar and vocals, Malcolm Clark on drums and keys, Lee Jones on guitar and keys, Dave Symes on bass and Felix Bloxsom on percussion, keys as well as guitar.

The Sleepy Jackson was formed in Perth by the year 1999.  By 2000, as an outcome of non-musical commitments, Luke Steele suggested that his brother should redirect his attentions and concentrate on other happenings in his life which ultimately resulted in Jesse following his advice and departing the band.  The band joined a Magic Dirt and Motor Ace tour which saw Ronan Charles joining Steele, O'Connor and Keenan on Keyboards on the eve of the Sleepy Jackson’s signing with EMI Records in March 2001. Five weeks into the tour, with the band broke, exhausted, and sleeping in caravan parks, O'Connor, Keenan and Charles quit, leaving Steele to complete the tour solo.

The Sleepy Jackson’s new album is entitled Personality. Recorded over three months with producer Scott Horscroft in Sydney in the spring of 2005 and written over the course of the last two years, it is proof that the symphonies constantly playing in Luke’s head are remarkable and unique. If his debut was a small screen marvel, Personality is its widescreen equal, with all the trials and troubles involved. Getting the record finished was not easy for Luke. The original plan was to record in Sydney and then finish it off with Dave Friddman (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips) in Buffalo later in the year, but it did not work out; the songs cried their way back home. The band of The Sleepy Jackson ended up doing some of the vocals in hotel rooms and round at Luke’s flat until the band got it to sound how it did in Luke’s creative mind. It was on New Year’s Eve when the band of The Sleepy Jackson finally finished the album.

In doing songwriting, the band of The Sleepy Jackson works hard and that brings about exemplary music.  Luke applies thunderbolt guitars and a lead vocal seemingly constructed from candy floss. Luke aimed to achieve something phonetic with the vocals yet with rhythmic appeal of Prince.

For The Sleepy Jackson, the aim of any musician should be to take what they like from all the artists they admire and love, and turn it into something new. Music for Luke Steele is magic; and the songs are like light flying in the door. And, as it says in God Lead Your Soul, you’ve got to keep your head up.  The Sleepy Jackson, through years of its amazing music, has proven its potentials and distinctiveness in the music industry.
