Simple Plan came about in stages that began with the formation of the Canadian band Reset, in 1995, by high-school friends Pierre Bouvier, Charles-André (Chuck) Comeau and Adrien White. Reset toured around Canada with bands such as MxPx, Ten Foot Pole, and Face to Face, but only managed to gain modest popularity. Their debut album was released in 1997. Chuck Comeau soon left to go to college, but two years later he hooked up with Jean-François (Jeff) Stinco and Sébastien Lefebvre, and started to make music again. In late 1999 it was coincidence that brought Comeau and Bouvier back together at a Sugar Ray concert, and Bouvier soon left Reset and joined his old friends. David Desrosiers replaced Bouvier in Reset, but when asked to join the foursome, he too left the band and joined the four friends.

When asked on where their name-Simple Plan-came from, one band member has stated "we didn't like complicated situations, we wanted something simple," thus, the name and band Simple Plan was born. Though, band members have given different responses on this point, including a liking for the movie A Simple Plan; that the band was their simple plan to shun getting a "real" job; and that the name was only intended to be brief, but they never thought of anything better.

In 2003, Simple Plan played as a headliner on the Vans Warped Tour. The same year, the band opened for Avril Lavigne on her "Try To Shut Me Up" Tour. In addition to several headlining tours, they have also opened for such bands as Green Day and Good Charlotte.

Although Simple Plan maintains a devoted following and has produced two multi-platinum records with numerous hit singles, they have received their fair share of criticism. Some members of the punk movement, are especially hostile towards the band as they see them as 'selling out' and trivializing their culture. Moreover, the juvenile subject matter of some of their work provokes additional hostility from some music fans due to the fact that its members are now in their mid to late-twenties. Nevertheless, the members of Simple Plan have stated quite clearly that they enjoy the backlash of critics, as they believe in the old adage, "all publicity is good publicity", and that they will never stop doing what they love.

Since February of 2006, Simple Plan has not undertaken any significant tours, but has been working on their third CD. Simple Plan is leaning towards working with Bob Rock to produce their third album. The band currently has 10-11 songs completed for the new LP. The title of three new songs in their anticipated new record are: "Take My Hand" (which Comeau described as "AFI meets the Killers meets Simple Plan"), "Never Should've Let You Go," which kicks off with an intro reminiscent of Third Eye Blind and a piano-driven tune tentatively called "Forever." Simple Plan is hoping to release there third album in the spring of 2007.
