More about Oar.
All bands want it. A lot of bands say they have it. Others have hits for years and never have it. O.A.R.'s got it: a loyal, organically grown grassroots following. Now, after four releases that made them one of the majority successful indie bands ever, culminating with their 2002 twice live CD, Any Time Now, which has sold nearly 100,000 copies, O.A.R. makes the change to a major label with their Lava/Everfine Records debut In Between Now and Then. It's a shift they have made carefully, but not just to make sure they found the right home for their music. In order not to depart a single fan behind, O.A.R. announced it to them first on their memo board and promised to personally answer all the questions fans asked. Ninety nine percent of the messages O.A.R. received were admiring.
Any fears fans may have had about the melody changing will fast be allayed with one listen to In Between Now and Then. Singer/lyricist Marc Roberge continues to discover his favorite themes--freedom, wanderlust, idealism, and love. Present and accounted for in precision-crafted songs like "Mr. Moon" is O.A.R.'s clandestine recipe for an infectious, joy-filled breezy cruise during rock and folk seasoned with what they like to purely call island vibe roots rock-pinches of ska and reggae. Songs like "Coalminer" and "Revisited" that may seem insecurely structured are actually so well anchored with tight playing that the listener always knows accurately where O.A.R. is guiding them. "Right On Time" is a factual rock and roll song, yet retains that feeling of ease that makes O.A.R.'s music stand out.
What began as a dream in the eyes of junior high school students Marc Roberge (vocals/rhythm guitar) and Chris Culos (drums) developed into an each day ritual of two best friends gathering after school in an old basement to feed an greedy interest in music that has now evolved into the truly original sound of O.A.R. Day in and day out, the two spent developing the sound that would finally become their own sole musical identity. They stumbled upon a true fusion of rock, reggae, ska and folk coupled with carefully selected lyrics that take the listener on a journey through the eyes of a wandering soul. The music offers the listener a fresh sound that is valuable of its own genre Ñ Island Vibe Roots Rock. As the two visionaries matured, they entered the high school ranks and the duo rapidly evolved into a band. The addition of guitarist Richard On further developed the sound as he added a musical style of lead guitar to the mix. With bass playe Benj Gershman union the group in early 1997, the band took on the name '...of a revolution.' and began playing locally in Maryland. The vision that began in the basement years before had now found its final piece to move forward
