More about Post Street Theatre in San Francisco
This wonderfully restored Post Theatre first opened in 1982 with the manufacture Talley's Follyand was home to many hit shows counting Steve Martin's Picasso At The Lapin Agile, Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, Forever Tango, Dame Edna: The Royal Tour and most lately, Lily Tomlin in The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe. In custody with the quality productions presented in years gone by, it is the mission of Post Street Theatre to present a varied array of high caliber, smaller scale Off-Broadway and avant-garde theatrical attraction.
The Post Theatre building located at 450 Post Street was built in 1924 by the kind and Protective Order of Elks in order to house a burgeoning membership. Using the designs of architect Anthony Heinsberger, whose dramatic architecture can also be seen at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland and at the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco, the whole 15-story structure was built at a cost $1.5 million dollars. The structure is of Spanish-Gothic design and originally restricted 100 hotel rooms (now the Kensington Park Hotel) for resident members and visiting Elks. The second floor main Lodge assembly hall (now Post Street Theatre) was intended to have a seating capacity of 1,000, a projection room, maple stage and theatre pipe organ. The Post Theatre building remained the home of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks until 1981, when it was leased by Elks to a variety of partners, creating a hotel, shops, and other spaces. At that time the second floor Lodge hall became Post Theatre on the Square where it was redesigned by architect Gene Angell. The flat-floored assembly hall was distorted into the 729-seat theatre as you see it today.
