About the team
The Oakland Raiders are one of the most successful franchises in all of pro sports when it comes to winning, but lately they have fallen upon hard times with three consecutive losing seasons since the Super Bowl appearance at the end of the 2002 season, this off-season major changes were made by the Oakland Raiders as QB Aaron Brooks was obtained from the New Orleans Saints to replace Kerry Collins and Art Shell was named head coach for a second time in an attempt to resurrect the silver and black. In 2005 the Oakland Raiders were beset by injuries and inconsistent play which contributed to a 4-12 record and a last place finish in the tough AFC West. Offensively the Oakland have the talent and skill to be a top flight unit with WR Randy Moss and a upcoming offensive line, on the other side of the ball is where the problem lies mostly as the Oakland Raiders gave up a whopping 383 points and couldn’t defend against the run, an issue that must be addressed in order for the team to compete against elite division foes who possess great runners such as LaDainain Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers and Larry Johnson of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Veteran DT Warren Sapp leads the defensive line and must stay healthy and step up his output for the this unit to become stout, along with DE Lance Johnstone who is a solid pass rusher, while DE Derrick Burgess is a terrific edge rusher but must play up to his potential and become more sturdy against the run, this group is capable of being solid. Grant Irons leads a group of inexperienced linebackers who have a chance to be superb though, rookies Darnell Bing who was an all-American safety at USC Trojans and Thomas Howard should help strengthen the position immediately with their speed and hitting ability, second-year man Kirk Morrison has a chance to be a pro bowl level player and off-season acquisition Robert Thomas can run sideline to sideline with his speed and nose for the ball, this unit is filled with quickness and potential. Longtime all-pro CB Charles Woodson signed with the Green Bay Packers leaving a huge hole at the position, but the Oakland Raiders feel first round draft CB Michael Huff from the University of Texas Longhorns will be a capable replacement, Huff has a very high football I.Q. which leads him to the ball, at the other corner Nnamdi Asomugha is a player on the rise who will be one of the better cover men in the AFC and should benefit by having a punishing hitter like SS Stuart Schweigert backing him up in the deep secondary, this unit has a chance to be very good and could even be great if CB Duane Starks who was picked up from the New England Patriots can rekindle the fire that made him an all-pro not so long ago.

The biggest move in the off-season was cutting longtime starter quarterback Kerry Collins and bringing in QB Aaron Brooks who has a big arm but also makes poor decisions at crucial times, Brooks has excellent mobility and can be an upgrade if he plays within himself and cuts down on turnovers, and learns to stop taking chances at critical stages of the game, QB Andrew Walter will be the second team passer and could see some action if Aaron Brooks struggles, some in the organization feel that Walter is the future at the position for the Oakland Raiders, this position is only average at best due to uncertainties. Powiferful RB Lamont Jordan rushed for 1,025 yards and caught 70 passes for another 563 yards in his first year with the team after being acquired from the New York Jets, Jordan is a handful to tackle and has surprising speed for a 230 pounder, RB Justin Far gas will spell Lamont Jordan and has great speed and good hands, this combination can keep defenses off balance, FB Zack Crockett will be the short yardage specialist and is virtually unstoppable near the goal line. Wide receiver may be the strongest position on the entire team for the Oakland Raiders as Randy Moss leads a talented group of pass catchers, Moss had an injury-plagued '05 but still managed to catch 60 passes for 1,005 yards and 8 TD's and is still the most dangerous deep threat in the game and perhaps in the history of the NFL, WR Jerry Porter is another outstanding wideout with game breaking ability and will make it almost impossible for opponents to double-team Moss, up and coming WR Doug Gabriel would be a first teamer on half of the teams in the league, but here is a great third option at the position, the wide receiver spot for the Oakland Raiders is first rate, raw but talented Courtney Anderson will be the tight end. OT Robert Gallery is slowly becoming a dominating blocker in just his third season and will be a pro bowler very soon, C Jake Grove is also moving in that direction and should be a fixture at the position for the next decade, veterans OT Langston Walker and G/T Barry Sims lend experience and versatility to line that has a chance to be a punishing group.

The kicking game of the Oakland Raiders is in good hands with pro bowl punter Shane Lechler and the inconsistent but talented PK Sebastian Janikowski. With the Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, and Kansas City Chiefs all in their division the Oakland Raiders have their work cut out for them as they could realistically all six encounters with those foes but be improved, look for the Oakland Raiders to win between six and seven games as the defense will be unable to handle high powered offenses....Great moment in team history......In 1983 the Oakland Raiders went 12-4 and muscled their way through the AFC playoffs to earn a date in Super Bowl XVIII with the defending Super Bowl champions the Washington Redskins, who were one of the four teams to defeat the Oakland Raiders during the regular season, but this time it would be different very, as this Super Bowl would be known as "Black Sunday" , the Oakland Raiders demolished the Washington Redskins 38-9 as RB Marcus Allen rushed for 171 yards and two touchdowns including and electrifying 74 yard score to earn him Super Bowl MVP.
