Born as Matthew Paul Miller in West Chester , Pennsylvania on June 30, 1979, the name Matisyahu came about as it may, being the Yiddish pronunciation of the Biblical name Matthew. At times in his career, Matisyahu has also gone by MC Truth as he spent time performing with MC Mystic's Soulfari band.
As Matisyahu was born into a Deconstructionist Jew family, he spent much of his childhood surrounded with such beliefs and upbringings. It was when Matisyahu went on a journey at the age of sixteen with other Jewish youth and really explored his religion that he started looking and leaning more towards Orthodox Judaism. It was soon after this choice that Matisyahu came in contact with a pioneer of contemporary Jewish music, Rabbi Schlomo. It came to be a large impact on the successful and passionate future and present of the talent that Matisyahu shares with the world.
Matisyahu went away for a bit to beautiful Bend , Oregon for a wilderness retreat, and when he returned Matisyahu began again with the music scene playing with a band by the name of Pey Dalid.
Matisyahu went through a later phase of associating with the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic community. Matisyaho soon after decided through all of the changes he made through the years since birth concerning his faith he didn't want to exclude himself from any other aspects or types of Jews and that he, "felt boxed in," he was quoted saying in the Miami New Times in 2007.
