Fans of the 1990 romantic/science fiction movie "Ghost" will certainly love this musical production. You don't even have to believe in ghosts either to appreciate the beautiful story and actors that perform in this musical. But before Ghost was a musical play or a movie, it was a book written by Bruce Joel Rubin. He is also the one that wrote the screenplay for the film, which won an Oscar for Best Screenplay of 1990. So, it should be no surprise that Rubin wrote the lyrics to the Ghost musical as well. The story of this show pretty much follows the same story as the movie. It is about a banker named Sam Wheat who is in love with a sculptor named Molly. One night they are walking home in Manhattan when a mugger kills Sam causing his soul to become in limbo, which means he can move around the world as a ghost, and nobody can see him.
Matthew Warchus is the director of the Ghost musical production, which is certainly not for traditional theater lovers. While the music and songs are mildly entertaining, the real heart of the show has to do with the visuals and romantic undertones. This show is mostly one big extensive set of video imagery that is mixed with special effects. On the upside, most of the audience is probably familiar with the original movie and so the story itself does not need much explanation. Viewers will be happy though because the show does have its share of comic relief with the Oda Mae Brown character, who is played by Da'Vine Joy Randolph in this production. This is the same character that Whoopi Goldberg won an Oscar for portraying in the movie version. In the theater show, the musical highlights by Oda Mae Brown are the best in the production. She goes from a gospel number in the first act to a disco anthem in the second act.
Overall, the musical is fun for people that like fancy visuals or for people that are fans of the movie. If you are a traditional theater lover and have never heard of the film, then you will probably have a hard time appreciating it. The main character, Sam, seems silly because he keeps trying to talk to people when he's a ghost. You'd think he'd realize that it won't work because he is already dead. Still, being a fan of the movie it was an enjoyable production to watch.
