Composed of members such as John Geils, known as J. Geils, Danny Klein, Richard Salwitz known as Magic Dick, Peter Wolf, Stpehen Jo Bladd as well as Seth Justman, the J. Geils Band started to take its journey to the music industry. J Geils is the band’s lead guitarist, a Southside-style with influences such as Jimi Hendrix, Steve Cropper, and James Brown's guitarists. Danny Klein, however, is the bassist of the J. Geils Band, known as D.K., he was a major soul fanatic. The J. Geils Band also has harmonica player by the name of Richard “Magic Dick” Salwitz who drew heavily from a wide variety of blues and jazz musicians, ranging from Little Walter to Roy Eldridge, King Curtis to John Coltrane. Moving on, Peter Wolf is the J. Geils Band’s lead vocals in which the band had found a comfortable niche within the booming folk music scene in Cambridge when they were overheard by a transplanted Bronx native by the name of Peter Wolf. Stephen Jo Bladd is the J. Geils Band’s drummer. He’s from the band that Peter formed known as the Hallucinations that is a soul band. Finally, to complete the six-man band, the J. Geils Band acquired Seth Justman who was their keyboardist. Seth finished the lineup that would remain intact through the early 1983.

Before there was The J. Geils Band, there was the J. Geils Blues Band, which is an acoustic trio composing of J. Geils, Danny Klein and Richard “Magic Dick” Salwitz. However, the two other members; Peter Wolf as well as Stephen Jo Bladd were both connected with the Hallucinations. As Wolf and Bladd joined the group, they decided to omit the Blues from their band’s name and went electric. And the complete J. Geils Band was formed. By year 1970, the J. Geils Band signed to Atlantic Records. The J. Geils Band first received FM radio airplay with the live single, entitled First I Look at the Purse, then had several hit singles in the 1970s, the most successful of which was Must of Got Lost by year 1974. After some time, the J. Geils Band signed with EMI America Records. Peter Wolf left the group in 1983 over artistic disagreements.

The group was not reunited with Wolf until 1999, and subsequently broke up again when ticket sales proved extremely disappointing. Peter Wolf continues to tour with his own backup band, and the rest of the J. Geils Band makes occasional appearances. On May 22, 2006, the six original members had a surprise reunion, at bassist Danny Klein's 60th birthday party at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston.

The J. Geils Band was a true American band - six men with a love and passion of music, really feeling blessed that we were able to prevail and keep going. The J. Geils Band has no fills, no tricks, just hard, sweaty rock 'n roll. And when we hit the stage it was show time!
