In addition to touring and recording with 'Rilo Kiley' Jenny Lewis is involved in many other projects. In 2002, Lewis contributed her vocals to the album 'Give Up' by The Postal Service. In 2004, Lewis recorded a solo record titled 'Rabbit Fur Coat' which was released on January 24, 2006. Described by Lewis as "a kind of soul record," Rabbit Fur Coat received many positive reviews, with Entertainment Weekly stating, "Consider Lewis the Emmylou Harris of the Silverlake set" and Rolling Stone commenting that "her girlishly seductive vocals are more versatile than ever." Lewis' album was named one of the best albums of the year by The Onion AV Club, Spin, and NPR music critic Meredith Ochs.
In 2007, Lewis joined her Rilo Kiley band mates and released 'Under the Blacklight'.
Under the Blacklight debuted at number 22 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and was #8 on Rolling Stone' s list of the Top 50 Albums of 2007. Also, Blender Magazine named Under the Blacklight the tenth best album of 2007, calling it "an album of classically sleek, apocalyptic '70s L.A. coke-rock, in the fine Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan tradition."
More recently, in 2008, Lewis contributed backing vocals to a number of songs on the Elvis Costello and the Imposters album 'Momofuku'. Lewis' credits many musical influences such as Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Laura Nyro with her work. Inclined by her mother's country music collection, Lewis says she has always identified with artists like Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, and later Lucinda Williams because of their strong female perspective.
