Sometimes considered as the forgotten team of Los Angeles, the Kings have quickly become one of the most popular teams in the city. Fans want to go out and watch one of the most successful hockey teams in the past five years put on a show. The Kings play in the Staples Center and that just adds to a great hockey atmospehere. Typically used for basketball games in Los Angeles, the Kings have gone to one of the most iconic arenas in sports and raised the Stanley Cup twice.
Going to the Staples Center to watch the Kings means fans are in for a big show. They will see the punishing hits, diving saves and the occasional fight. But nothing is better than hearing the horn blare around the Staples Center after the Kings put the puck in the back of the net. This is an atmosphere that just can't be replicated by watching a game on TV and fans need to try and make it to a game at any cost.
The Kings are also one of the perennial powers in the NHL. They have a balanced attack and their depth on both sides of the ice is unmatched by any team in hockey. The Kings have also had success with their team and talent, as they have won the Stanley Cup twice in the last five years. This means that the Kings are always going to have a chance to win in front of their fans, adding to the value of any ticket.
Los Angeles Kings Team Info
The Kings are a balanced team without many stars but the most recognizable player for the Kings has to be goalie Jonathan Quick. Quick is a brick wall when he's in net and considered by many to be the best goalie in the league. For offensive firepower, the Kings typically look toward Anze Kopitar, who will dish off nasty assists for his teammates when he isn't scoring himself. Their depth is what makes the team so strong with players like Jeff Carter and Justin Williams playing strong roles in the Kings' success.
Los Angeles Kings Playoff Experience
Since joining the NHL in 1967, the Kings have made the playoffs a total of 28 different times. Unfortunately for Los Angeles, when they have made the playoffs they have not made much noise. In those 28 playoff appearances, they have only made it to the Stanley Cup Finals three times. Two of those Stanley Cup appearances, however, have come in the last five years, showing that the current team is possibly the most successful in the franchise's history.
Los Angeles Kings History
Unlike other teams across the NHL, the Kings have been a stable franchise, never moving from Los Angeles or changing team names since their founding in 1967. Since their founding, the Kings have won two Stanley Cup Finals in 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 and played in one other championship series. The Kings have been home to several Hall of Fame players, but none more important than defenseman Rob Blake. Blake played for the Kings for over a decade and was one of the best defensemen to ever play the game. Blake is arguably the best King in the history of the franchise but he should have some competition soon from the likes of Jonathan Quick, who continues to make his own history in Los Angeles.
Did you know the Kings were involved in the most shocking trade in sports history?
Only hours after the Edmonton Oilers had won the Stanley Cup in 1988, the Kings traded for arguably the greatest hockey player to ever play, Wayne Gretzky. This trade shocked Canadian fans, as Gretzky hailed from the country and just led the Oilers to the Cup. After the trade, Gretzky played in Los Angeles for 8 seasons, leading the Kings to several playoff berths.
California is not really a hockey state, let alone the city of Los Angeles, which has two NBA teams as well as two MLB teams. But despite all of the competition and location, the Kings' have brought in more than their fair share of fans, ranking 15th in attendance among all NHL teams. And as long as the Kings continue to compete and put out a great team, the fan base will continue to grow.
