The Yellow Jackets team competes in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Georgia Tech has produced 32 All-Americans and 38 conference champions.

The team plays its home games at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field, which opened in 1913 and is the oldest continuously used the site for college football in the Southern United States. Georgia Tech's first season was in 1892. The team played its first game against Mercer University on January 22, 1892, winning 50–0.
