Duke began playing football in 1893 with a 9–0 win over Trinity College. The team went undefeated in its first three seasons, winning all three games by a combined score of 134–0. In these early years, Duke gained notoriety for its "iron dukes" defense, nicknamed after Trinity's "iron dukes" nickname. Duke then won five straight games from 1896 to 1900, all by shutout, and claimed a perfect 11–0 record in 1898. Duke's success during this early period gave rise to the nickname "The Invincibles," used to describe the team's undefeated run of 1892–1899.
