Pearl Jam Concert Tour

Pearl Jam, the popular rock band first formed in 1990, is well known for its progressive rock music, impressive vocal singers and musicians-and, surprisingly, for their work in the campaigning and activism for a variety of social issues. It is perhaps not unusual for someone with the same type of success that Pearl Jam has enjoyed to give to charities or even support certain charitable organizations and causes; this is especially true for causes that relate to the stars personal lives, or even the types of films or music or work they are famous for-such as the support of Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio to various historical charities related to the Titanic disaster.

Pearl Jam has a long history of activism. They have been known to promote many different causes, including but not limited to: awareness of Crohn's disease--a disease that Mike McCready, band member, suffers from; the venue monopolization tactics by popular music ticket service Ticketmaster; and numerous animal and environmental issues, such as promoting carbon neutral policies and opposing dumping oil and effluent in natural lakes.

The band has also been active in the political circuit, especially during the term of George W. Bush. Their music during this era--particularly 2004 to 2007, featured several noticeable instances of the band criticizing the policies of George W. Bush. During Lollapalooza 2007, for example, the band used the lyrics "George Bush live the world alone, George Bush find yourself another home," in addition to inviting an Iraq war veteran on stage to urge an end to the war in Iraq.

Pearl Jam has also agreed to numerous benefit performances, such as a 2001 Seattle concert organized to combat world hunger; a 2005 Chicago concert added to their tour to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina-just to name a few.

It is not so strange for those with the money to help others to give what they can, when they can-Pearl Jam, however, can be easily described as going well above and beyond what other contemporary musicians and bands have done. In fact, the band is so well known and active in campaigning for political, social, and environmental and wildlife issues that they were awarded the Planet Defenders title award by Rock the Earth in 2011. This was likely inspired by one of the band's greatest moves, their decision to become "carbon neutral," or to greatly reduce their carbon footprint on the environment.
