The Crazy Frog started when Daniel Malmedahl impersonates the sound of internal combustion engines. The 17 year old Swede posted the record on his site and started to catch attention from the web surfers. Suddenly, a Swedish television researcher convinced Daniel to perform the sound live on air. After Daniel's television debut, recordings of his performance began to spread in the internet. In year 2000, Erik Wernquist encountered the sound effect and was inspired to create the 3D animation. Erik Wernquist posted the application to his site. The animation became popular and broadcasted for the first time on two Belgian commercials for Ringtone Europe and Jamster België (now both merged into Jamba!) in mid-2001.

In the year 2005, a German electronic music production team named Bass Bumpers assigned two of its members to record a dance single based around the Crazy Frog ring tone. They produced the single "Axel F." The single became one of the most successful singles in the year 2005.

Crazy Frog Presents Crazy Hits: first album by Crazy Frog, released on July 25, 2005 in Europe and on August 23, 2005 in the United States under Ministry of Sound (one of the most famous nightclubs in the world of electronic music, a record label that produces many compilations each year), a collection of songs mixed with the Crazy Frog ringtone; debuted at 1 on the New Zealand Top 40 Album Chart, reached 5 on the UK Albums Chart, 18 in Australia, and 19 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Albums Chart.
