The first week of the year was an up and down one for the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers opened the week by losing to the Phoenix Suns before winning consecutive games over Charlotte and Dallas. Saturday night they were blown out by the San Antonio Spurs and then suffered the double whammy when they found out that they’ll be without Chris Paul for as long as six weeks due to a separated shoulder. Paul suffered the injury during Thursday night’s loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Week Recap: The Clippers maintained their solid playoff position in the Western Conference but now face the unenviable task of a month and a half without their star point guard. Beyond Lebron James there may not be a more valuable player in the NBA and it will be interesting to see how the Clippers get by without Paul. Last season the Clippers had Eric Bledsoe to fill in when Paul was out. With Bledsoe now with the Phoenix Suns the Clippers don’t have that luxury and will rely on veteran Darren Collison to fill Paul’s shoes. Collison is a capable veteran backup who will attempt to give the Clippers what they lack in Paul’s absence. The other big news in Clipper-land is the rumors that the Knicks and Clippers may be considering a Blake Griffin for Carmelo Anthony swap. Rumors in the NBA are a dime a dozen but the sheer fact that there is potential conversation around dealing Griffin is interesting. The Clippers star is having a solid season with a strong run of play over the past five games. He clearly has his limitations, especially as a go to scorer or from the free throw line, but the fact the Clippers could be entertaining a trade for Anthony does indicate the organization may have a concern that Griffin may not have much higher of a ceiling as a player.

The Week Ahead: The Clippers have a line schedule over the next week with three home games, all winnable without Chris Paul. The Clippers open the week by welcoming the Orlando Magic and second overall pick Victor Oladipo into STAPLES Center. The Magic are just 10-23 and in fifth place in a weak Atlantic Division. They have a talented young core of players but have been unable to win close games. After facing the Magic the Clippers host the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night at STAPLES Center. Boston, who completely dismantled their roster in the offseason, has been competitive this year, but has struggled lately. Former Butler University Head Coach Brad Stevens has done impressive work with a young Celtics team in his debut NBA season. The game will earn national attention due to Doc Rivers first game coaching against the team he led to an NBA title and then left in the offseason. The Clippers then wrap up the week with a game versus the struggling Lakers on Friday night.By:Chris Michaels.
