With three games at STAPLES Center and Jonathan Quick back in the lineup last week was a big week for the Los Angeles Kings. With the Anaheim Ducks running out to a commanding lead in the division the Kings were looking to make up ground on the Ducks. The Kings performed well, outshooting their opponents by a wide margin, but unfortunately ran into red hot goaltending from both the Minnesota Wild and the Detroit Red Wings. Behind strong performances from Wild goaltender Darcy Kuemper and Red Wings netminder Jimmy Carson the Kings finished the week with a win, a loss and an overtime loss.

Week Recap: After defeating the Vancouver Canucks to kick off their home stand the Kings welcomed in the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night, minus goaltenders Josh Harding and Nicolas Backstrom, were starting third-stringer Darcy Kuemper in net. Kuemper put together a career-best performance, stopping 39 of the 40 shots he faced before Nino Niedereitter scored to put the game into overtime and then notched the game-winner in the shootout. The Kings returned to action on Thursday with an impressive victory over the Boston Bruins, perennial Eastern Conference power. The Kings jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from Jeff Carter, Justin Williams and Alec Martinez, a lead that would eventually go to 4-1. Quick notched the victory, his second in three starts since his return. Unbeated in regulation in their last three games, Los Angeles welcomed in the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night. Los Angeles again dominated possession and shots on goal but lost at the hands of a hot goaltender. Jimmy Carson, who’ll join Quick on the USA hockey team, stopped 44 of the 45 shots he faced in earning the victory.

Up next for the Kings: Los Angeles has one game remaining in their home stand, an important matchup with the Vancouver Canucks. Tickets for the Kings Vs Canucks are still available. In a season filled with injuries, most prominently a serious groin injury suffered by star goaltender Jonathan Quick, the Los Angeles Kings have stayed afloat in the face of adversity, behind elite backup goaltending and outstanding play from their deep defensive unit. After a 14-6-3 streak without Quick and a five game pointless streak the Los Angeles Kings were badly needed their star goaltender back. To kick off a five-game home stand Quick returned and the Kings regained their winning ways, defeating the Vancouver Canucks 3-1. Quick didn’t miss a beat, making 27 saves as the Kings rallied back with three goals in the 3rd period to earn the victory. With victory in hand the Kings have a golden opportunity to make a run back towards the top of the standings.

Up until the recent five-game losing streak the Kings had thrived behind the stellar play of backup goaltenders Ben Scrivens and Martin Jones. Scrivens, who the Kings acquired along with Matt Frattin in the Jonathon Bernier trade, has been as hot as any goaltender in the NHL this season. Scrivens, a late bloomer who didn’t make his NHL debut until the age of 26 last year with Toronto, has a 1.97 goals against average and a save percentage of .931. A month ago the Kings called up Martin Jones from the AHL Manchester Monarchs, and like Scrivens, Jones has shown incredible form. The rookie tied an NHL record by winning his first eight starts, including three shutouts. Jones has managed to top even Scrivens, with an absurdly low 1.41 goals against average and a .950 save percentage. The play of Scrivens and Jones has leveled out of late, probably too be expected. With two solid backups the Kings are suddenly wealthy in the goaltender department, as they welcomed back Quick.

In a stacked Western Conference the play of Jones and Scrivens may have saved the Kings season. Poor backup goaltending may have put Los Angeles in a hole they couldn’t dig out of, not to mention the other injuries the Kings have dealt with key cogs such as Jeff Carter, Jarrett Stoll, Matt Greene, Willie Mitchell and Kyle Clifford. With Quick soon to return the Kings are finally healthy and look primed to make a run toward Chicago and Anaheim at the top of the Western Conference standings. The next four games, all at STAPLES Center, are key. The next four at STAPLES Center brings in some tough competition, from both the Western and Eastern Conferences. With Saturday’s win versus Vancouver in the books the Kings host the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. Minnesota, led by Zach Parise and Ryan Suter is a gritty, defensive oriented club. The Wild will be a good warm up for Thursday night’s game versus the Boston Bruins. Boston, winner of the Stanley Cup two seasons ago leads the Atlantic Division with 56 points, the second best record in the Eastern Conference. Following the matchup with the Bruins the Kings host perennial power Detroit on Saturday, January 11. The Red Wings are in playoff contention as a new member of the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference. Led by Pavel Datysuk and Henrik Zetterberg Detroit is one of the most storied franchises in league history and, like Boston, one of the Original Six NHL franchises. Los Angeles then wraps up the home stand with another visit by the Vancouver Canucks. In an odd twist of scheduling the Canucks visit the Kings twice in a nine-day span.

If Los Angeles can effectively navigate their upcoming home stand they’ll be in good shape leading up to the Sochi Winter Olympics break. With Quick back in the lineup the Kings are primed for a race toward the top of the NHL standings. Armed with one of the top defensive units in the league and as good as any team in possession, Los Angeles has all the indicators of a team that can make another deep Stanley Cup playoff run. The NHL has quite a surprise on their hands with the Western Conference Finals as it features 2 teams nobody really expected to be here several months ago. Your two teams are the 8th seeded Los Angeles Kings and the 3 seeded Phoenix Coyotes.

Entering the post season the Kings finished only 2 points behind the Coyotes but thanks to league rules that state a division winner gets a top 3 seed, the Coyotes leapfrogged over several teams with more total points and were able to earn home ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs.

The Kings lost their final 2 games of the regular season to the San Jose Sharks knocking them down into the 8th seed and giving them the task of having to knock off the top seeded Vancouver Canucks to advance to the second round.

The Kings started the playoffs red hot as they took the first 3 games of the series from the Canucks to take a 3-0 series lead. In game 4 however, the Kings stumbled as they lost to the Canucks to make the series 3-1. In game 4 the Kings were able to rebound thanks to a Jarret Stoll overtime goal which gave the Kings the series victory over the Canucks and propelled them to the second round to take on the second seeded St. Louis Blues.

Just like in the first round, the Kings had to open the series on the road and once again won both games on the opponents ice sending them back to L.A. with a 2 games to none lead. In game 3 the Kings were able to excite the home crowd as they won again, this time by a score of 4-2 to take a 3-0 series lead for the second straight round. Unlike in round 1 where the Kings were unable to close out the series on home ice, the Kings were able to defeat the Blues 2-1 in game 4 to send the Staples Center crowd into euphoria and advancing the Kings into the third round of the playoffs and a date with the Phoenix Coyotes.

During the regular season these 2 teams split the series at 3 games a-piece with the most recent game being a 5-4 shootout victory for the Coyotes back on February 21st.

Both of the goaltenders in this upcoming series have been red hot during the postseason as Jonathan Quick leads all active goalies in playoff GAA right now with a 1.55 GAA and .949 save percentage while Mike Smith has been almost as good sporting a 1.85 GAA with a save percentage of .946.

While it is expected that this series will be low scoring, it needs to be pointed out that the Kings are averaging 3 goals per game in the playoffs while the Coyotes are averaging 2.64 goals per game, so a high scoring game is not entirely out of the question. With the stellar goaltending however it would not be surprising at all to see one game end 1-0 and the following game be a 5-4 finale.

As of now it is unknown when the series will start, but you can bet that it will be an exciting matchup and ultimately will send a team from the Pacific Division to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 2007 when the Anaheim Ducks represented the Pacific Division en route to their Stanley Cup victory

The Los Angeles Kings will get another crack at their first playoff series win since 2001 when they visit the Vancouver Canucks for Game 5 of their Western Conference quarterfinals matchup on Sunday. Los Angeles built the first 3-0 series lead in franchise history but failed to eliminate Vancouver at home on Wednesday. The Presidents’ Trophy-winning Canucks, who welcomed Daniel Sedin back to the lineup after a 12-game absence due to a concussion, are looking to do what only three teams in NHL history have accomplished – win a series after trailing 3-0.

Many players are not happy about the three-day break between Games 4 and 5, but Jeff Carter is not among them. Carter missed time at the end of the regular season with an ankle injury but returned to the lineup for the start of the Vancouver series. After going three games without a point following a two-assist performance in the series opener, Carter is pleased to have more time to heal. “I think with the two days before the last game, and then the extra day here, it’s probably not an ideal situation, but for myself personally and for some other guys around here that are a little banged up, it’s nice to get a little extra rest,” Carter said. Kyle Clifford did some skating for two days but stayed off the ice Friday. Clifford, who was on the receiving end of a hit from behind by Byron Bitz, has an upper-body injury and is doubtful for Sunday’s contest.

Cory Schneider is likely to make his third straight start, leaving Roberto Luongo again on the bench. Schneider praised Luongo’s demeanor and approach to serving as backup. “He’s been great to me and great to the team,” Schneider said. “He’s handled this extremely well. He hasn’t said a word and he’s been nothing but a true professional and the great guy that he is.” Luongo explained his reason for not raising a ruckus. “Things change quickly in this league, so right now I’m just focused on Game 5,” he said. “That’s where my attention needs to be.” Much like Carter, Daniel Sedin must be happy to have three days off. Sedin, who missed 12 games with a concussion, returned for Game 4 and notched an assist. “The fact we’ve got three days in between games here is going to permit Danny to get up to his speed,” coach Alain Vigneault said.

CANUCKS 3, KINGS 1: Defenseman Alex Edler and captain Henrik Sedin scored power-play goals as Vancouver staved off elimination by topping host Los Angeles in Game 4 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Kevin Bieksa also tallied, fellow blue-liner Dan Hamhuis notched two assists and Cory Schneider made 43 saves in his first career playoff win for the Canucks, who avoided becoming the first Presidents’ Trophy winners to be swept in the first round.

Daniel Sedin recorded an assist in his return to the lineup after missing 12 games with a concussion.

Vancouver hosts Game 5 on Sunday.

The Kings struck first as Anze Kopitar scored his first goal of the series with seven minutes remaining in the first period. After avoiding a hit by Mason Raymond at the blue line, Kopitar skated down the right side and beat Schneider from the faceoff circle for a 1-0 lead.

Vancouver pulled even during a power play just over four minutes into the second when Edler wristed the puck past Jonathan Quick from the right point. The Canucks entered the game 0 for 14 with the man advantage in the series.

Bieksa put the Canucks ahead 4 1/2 minutes later as Kings center Mike Richards inadvertently deflected Bieksa’s slap shot from the right point past Quick.

With Los Angeles down a skater, captain Dustin Brown – who already has two shorthanded goals in the series – was awarded a penalty shot 5:23 into the third after being tripped up by Bieksa during a breakaway. But Schneider made the save, and Henrik Sedin buried a rebound from the bottom of the left circle 22 seconds later for his second goal in 27 contests and a 3-1 advantage.

Quick stopped 27 shots for the Kings, who remain one win away from their first series victory since 2001.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Vancouver had lost its previous five playoff contests, including Games 6 and 7 of last year’s Stanley Cup Final against the Boston Bruins. … Los Angeles’ Brad Richardson returned to the lineup after missing the first three games of the series following an emergency appendectomy. Richardson registered three shots in 10 minutes, 14 seconds of action. … Byron Bitz was a healthy scratch for the Canucks after serving his two-game suspension for hitting Kyle Clifford from behind. Clifford remains out with an upper-body injury. … The road team is 19-9 thus far in the postseason.

KINGS 1, CANUCKS 0: Dustin Brown scored 6 1/2 minutes into the third period and Jonathan Quick made 41 saves as Los Angeles pushed the Presidents’ Trophy winners to the brink of elimination in their Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Justin Williams and Anze Kopitar each notched an assist for the Kings, who own a 3-0 series lead for the first time in franchise history. They try to complete the sweep at home on Wednesday.

Brown, who drew the ire of the Canucks for a hit on Henrik Sedin early in the second period that temporarily knocked the Vancouver captain out of the game, gave Quick all the offensive support he needed with his fourth goal of the series.

Williams’ shot from the top of the right faceoff circle was stopped by Cory Schneider. But the rebound went right to Brown, and the LA Kings‘ captain buried it from the bottom of the left circle for a 1-0 advantage.

Quick turned aside 11 shots in the first period, 14 in the second and 16 in the third for his second career postseason shutout. The 26-year-old led the NHL with 10 regular-season shutouts.

Schneider made 19 saves for the Canucks, who had just four power-play opportunities while giving the Kings eight chances.

GAME NOTEBOOK: All-Star defenseman Alex Edler essentially ended Vancouver’s comeback chances when he fired the puck over the glass for a delay-of-game penalty with 97 seconds remaining in the third period. … While registering 41 shots, the Canucks had another 23 attempts blocked. … Drew Doughty led the Kings in ice time for the third straight game, logging 25 minutes, 56 seconds. KINGS 4, CANUCKS 2: Dustin Penner snapped a tie with 3:14 remaining in the third period as visiting Los Angeles upset the Presidents’ Trophy winners in the opener of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Mike Richards recorded a goal and two assists, defenseman Willie Mitchell and captain Dustin Brown also scored and Jonathan Quick made 24 saves for the Kings, who outshot the Canucks 39-26.

Richards caused a turnover in the offensive zone and made a pass from the top of the left faceoff circle to Jeff Carter, who directed the puck across the slot with his skate. Penner quickly fired the puck past Roberto Luongo to give Los Angeles a 3-2 edge.

Brown sealed the victory with an empty-netter with 18 seconds remaining.

With Daniel Sedin sitting out his 10th straight game with a concussion, the Vancouver Canucks got on the board 4:17 into the first period on a questionable goal by Alex Burrows.

Burrows grabbed his own rebound in the high slot and fired it past Quick, who was knocked down moments earlier by Ryan Kesler. Quick’s protest fell on deaf ears, however, as Burrows was awarded his 17th career playoff goal.

Los Angeles answered during the first of its two 5-on-3 advantages in the session as Richards banked a shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle off Luongo with 6 1/2 minutes remaining.

Former Canuck Mitchell gave the Kings a 2-1 lead with 3:27 left in the second when his blast from the left point deflected off Jannik Hansen’s stick and past Luongo with 39 seconds to go on Byron Bitz’s five-minute major for boarding.

Canucks blue-liner Alex Edler evened the contest with 7.3 seconds remaining in the second as his wrist shot from the right point hit a defender’s stick and sailed over Quick.

Kesler notched two assists and Luongo stopped 35 shots for the Canucks, who lost for the first time in nine playoff series openers.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Carter returned to the Kings’ lineup from an ankle injury and recorded a pair of assists. … Los Angeles defenseman Drew Doughty led all players with 28:18 of ice time. … Vancouver lost for only the second time with Sedin out of the lineup. … The Kings have won only four of their last 12 visits to Rogers Arena.
