La Cage Aux Folles, or The Bird Cage, is the brilliant theater musical written by Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman. La Cage Aux Folles is based on the original French play with the same name written in 1973 by Jean Poiret. It was another ten years before La Cage Aux Folles made it to Broadway for this 1983 debut! The original Broadway production received nine Tony nominations and six Tony wins. Some of the categories best noted for La Cage Aux Folles are Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book. The play took a hiatus for many years before being revived on Broadway in 2004. The 2004 Broadway revival of La Cage Aux Folles won a Tony Award for Best Revival. In 2008 La Cage Aux Folles won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. In 2010 La Cage Aux Folles was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and won again the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, making La Cage Aux Folles the only musical to win Best Revival more than once!
In the fall of 2011 La Cage Aux Folles embarked on another National Tour. This exciting and colorful play is centered on a gay couple named Georges and his fun-loving “wife” Albin. Georges is the esteemed owner of the prominent drag nightclub in St. Tropez called La Cage Aux Folles, or The Bird Cage. Georges and Albin live in the apartment above La Cage Aux Folles along with their black maid Jacob. Albin is the star performer of La Cage Aux Folles and uses the alias Zaza. La Cage Aux Folles depicts the happy couple living in perfect harmony until one day Georges receives a request from his son Jean-Michel. Jean Michel is engaged to the daughter of the head of the “Tradition, Family, and Morality Party” that is in fact on a mission to close down all drag clubs in St. Tropez. This awkward set-up gets even worse when Jean-Michel tells his father that he has told his fiancée that Georges is in fact a retired diplomat.
La Cage Aux Folles then delivers a hysterical comedy of errors as Georges, Albin, the maid, and Jean Michel all strain to maintain the lie and hide the drag queen lifestyle from Jean Michel’s fiancée’s parents! Chicago the Musical is set in the roaring twenties during prohibition-era Chicago! During the time of speak-easies, illegal alcohol sales, flapper dresses and short, bob hair cuts, Chicago is intensely rich with the raw sexuality and crude survivalists in 1920’s Chicago. Chicago has all the necessary ingredients for a hit Broadway show; with fame, fortune, and incredible song and choreography one after another. Since Chicago first opened on Broadway in 1975 it has won six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, and a Grammy, along with having received over 1,000 standing ovations. Chicago has embarked on multiple revivals and countless North American and UK tours. Chicago has been such a huge production that it was adapted into a hit film, weighing in some of the biggest stars in the world at that time. The film was directed by Rob Marshall and starred Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah and John C. Reilly.
The story of Chicago unfolds with vuadevill star Velma Kelly. She is serving time for killing both her husband and sister after finding the two in bed together. Velma rules the roost with her celebrity fame and beauty. But she becomes threatened when the equally beautiful Roxie is accused of killing her lover. At first Roxie convinces her unassuming husband to take the blame, telling him it was a burglary. However her husband eventually puts the facts together and Roxie is sent to prison where she joins the likes of Velma. Roxie steps on Velma’s limelight and the music and lights and feud excite the stage as Chicago puts on a note-worthy show. Billy Elliot was a 2000 hit film about an eleven year old aspiring dancer in northern England. It was nominated and won for countless British Independent Film Awards and was nominated at the 2001 Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and countless others. The success of the film prompted the adaptation of the film to a musical. By 2005 it was adapted to the West End stage as Billy Elliot the Musical. It debuted in Australia in 2007 and came to the U.S. in 2008. Billy Elliot the Musical swept reviews and awards after its opening in the U.S. The New York Post called Billy Elliot “The Best Show You’ll Ever See”. It won ten Tony Awards, an Olivier Award, and has been seen by over 7.5 million people across the globe.
The heartwarming and humorous story integrates some crude British humor and creates a fine balance for audiences young and old. As the young son of an English coal miner steps out of boxing and finds himself in the middle of a ballet class, Billy Elliot discovers within himself a natural talent that is so great and a passion so deep that it inspires not only himself and his family, but an entire community as well. Billy Elliot’s mother died long ago and his search for fulfillment and love are in strike contrast with the coal miners strike of 1984-1985 that is going on in County Durham. Needless to say ballet is not considered a popular sport amongst boys in a British 1980’s coal mining town but Billy Elliot’s talent and drive prove his father and his community wrong and also teaches them the value of following your heart.
Now Billy Elliot is making its way to the West Coast as it gets ready for a lengthy run at the Pantages Theater. Don’t miss your chance to see Billy Elliot the Musical live on the Pantages Theater stage in Hollywood, CA. The stunning Pantages Theater opened June 4, 1930. This stunning indoor theatre looks frozen in time as if walking onto a 1930’s film set. With a seating capacity of 2,703, this modest-sized theater will sell out Billy Elliot Pantages Theater tickets in a blink! Visit www.BarrysTickets.com for your Billy Elliot tickets today!
