After another unsuccessful regular season in 2014 the San Diego Padres were extremely aggressive in the offseason, acquiring an entire new outfield in former Los Angeles Dodger Matt Kemp, slugger Justin Upton from the Atlanta Braves and one of the most talented young power hitters in baseball, Wil Meyers. After missing the playoffs for the 8th consecutive season the Padres set out in the offseason to upgrade their offense and made a major statement in re-tooling their outfield. The revised outfield will team with young third baseman Will Middlebrooks and second baseman Jed Gyorko to potentially give the Padres an offensive attack to rival their outstanding young starting rotation. With incumbent catcher Yasmani Grandal now a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Padres acquired Derek Norris, an outstanding offensive catcher, from the Oakland Athletics. Norris should give the Padres consistent offensive production from the catcher position. The strength of the Padres last season was the starting rotation, led by Tyson Ross, Andrew Hahn, Ian Kennedy and Andrew Cashner. Ross, Hahn and Cashner all had earned run averages at and under 3.00, with Ross putting together a breakout season, finishing in the top ten in the league in earned run average. Andrew Cashner is the teams ace, putting together another outstanding season in 2014, while dealing with injury in the process. The big right-hander had a 2.55 earned run average.
Currently opening day ticket prices for the San Diego Padres on the secondary market have risen from an average ticket price of $130.00 in 2014 to $210.00 in 2015, a jump of 56 percent. The average ticket prices on the secondary market for Padres home games at Petco Park also rose from $38.00 in 2014 to $65.00 in 2015, an increase of 71 percent. The most expensive games of the 2015 season come when the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers visit Petco Park in San Diego. The rise in ticket prices on the secondary market is based on the increased expectations of the Padres, due in large part to their aggressive efforts in the offseason to build their roster and compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants in the National League West. With a dependable bullpen, one of the best starting rotations in baseball, and a new slugging outfield the Padres suddenly have big expectations. The key to their success will be the performance of Kemp and the evolution of Wil Meyers. Kemp had a tremendous second half last season, leading the National League in runs batted in after the All Star break. Meyers has prodigious power but battled inconsistency and injury last season. If he can recapture his form from 2013 the Padres could very well have the top slugging outfield in major league baseball.
The Padres will enter the 2015 season as one of the bigger stories in baseball and will be an interesting team to watch. If they can pull their offense out of the basement and if the young rotation continues their evolution they very well could give the Dodgers and Giants more than they can handle in the NL West.

After a double-header that saw the Dodgers compete in split squad games versus the San Diego Padres and the Chicago White Sox the team is off for the long trip to Australia for next weekend’s season opening two-game series versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. With the early opener just a week away, here are some Dodgers notes.
For the past several years Major League Baseball has worked hard to advance the interest in baseball around the globe. This includes kicking off the regular season with games in Mexico and Japan. This coming season the league will extend their outreach with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks kicking off the 2014 regular season in Sydney, Australia.
The decision to start the season in Australia has found quite a bit of support but also a significant amount of opposition from the two teams fan bases. The Dodgers and Diamondbacks will be loyal to the MLB cause and probably won’t complain too much, but traveling over 7000 miles to kick off the regular season could have obvious impact on the club’s ability to acclimate upon their return, due to the obvious jet lag. Like in years past MLB will give the clubs adequate time to recover before they set off to play the bulk of their regular season schedule. The two clubs will leave spring training early and then play a two game weekend series in Sydney, March 22-23. The Dodgers will then have a full week off to recover prior to heading down to San Diego to kick off the domestic portion of their schedule on March 31. The early game will give the Dodgers a slightly shorter Spring Training as in years past. The good thing for Dodgers fans is that both games in Australia will be Diamondback home games, giving Los Angeles the full 81 game schedule at Dodger Stadium for the upcoming season. It will also protect the Dodgers traditional home opener, which will take place Friday, April 4th versus their longtime rival San Francisco Giants.
Australia has long been and up and coming market for baseball talent with many current and former players from down under including former Dodgers Craig Shipley, Jeff Williams and Trent Oeltjen. Australian fans will get the opportunity to see what is quickly becoming one of the hottest rivalries in all of baseball. Although the Diamondbacks finished a distant second to the Dodgers last season the rivalry was amped up with a bench clearing brawl this past June. A massive fight ensued after Dodgers ace Zack Grienke was hit by a pitch. The two teams continued their war or words all season with several Diamondback players taking umbrage with the playing style of Yasiel Puig. The distaste between the two teams was amped up even more when the Dodgers clinched the divisional title in Phoenix and proceeded to celebrate in the pool Arizona has behind the right field fence. Beyond the dislike the clubs have for each other is the fact that they’ll be competing for the division title again this season and the two opening games in Australia can help set the tone of the coming regular season. The Dodgers will likely start with Clayton Kershaw and Zack Grienke on the mound, giving Aussie fans a glimpse of perhaps the best one-two rotation combination in baseball. If Los Angeles can sweep the two games down under they’ll have two road victories versus Arizona and an instant leg up in the division.
