Over and over the Super Bowl commercials make it into the Guinness Book of World Records for “Most Viewed Commercial in T.V. History”, and the half-time show makes an equal impact. With over 100 million views on a regular basis, last year the half-time show performed by Bruno Mars WAS the most watched halftime in history at 115.3 million views. According to Nielsen the 2014 Super Bowl had 25.3 million tweets during it. The runner-up was Madonna‘s 2012 appearance, at 114 million views. This year, the Super Bowl has invited super star Katy Perry. On February 1, 2015 Katy Perry will be performing at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. Beating out Coldplay, this is Katy Perry’s biggest performance yet. Strangely, although perhaps not surprisingly, artists do not get paid by the Super Bowl; merely they have their travel expenses covered by the NFL.
So what does Katy Perry actually get out of the show? Besides having her name permanently etched in history alongside the greatest music acts of all time, including Michael Jackson who performed in 1993, a performance that changed the Super Bowl forever, making it a celebrity event ever since.
In 2009, the Hello Katy Tour put Katy Perry at an astounding eighty-nine concerts. The attendance was 76,485 and grossed $1,508,092.00. This number does not include any of her merchandise or records. The tour took Katy Perry and her fans across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia and lasted from January 23, 2009 through November 28, 2009. Her set list was seventeen songs and an additional encore of two songs. At that time, Katy was fresh on the market and her songs were running the radio airwaves. Everyone knows “I Kissed a Girl” and “Don’t Stop Me Now”, a cover from Queen.
Katy Perry’s California Dream Tour was her next. It lasted February 20, 2011 through January 22, 2012, almost a full calendar year. She did forty-six shows in Europe, eleven in Oceania, six in Asia, sixty-one in North America, and three in South America, totaling 127 shows. The result was an astounding 1,088,817 attendees and ticket sales of $51,834,881.00, and again, that’s not including merchandise and records.
Katy Perry’s third world tour broke those records by almost three times the amount of money made. It lasted May 7, 2014 and is still going through March 22, 2015. Tickets sold result in 130 concerts in four legs of the tour. The sales mean 1,131,823 tickets and sales totaling $142,850,951 as of the first of the year. That still leaves 21 more dates scheduled after February 16th!
What is amazing about Katy Perry performing at the Super Bowl is her unparalleled success already.
After his performance during the 2014 Super Bowl, Bruno Mars “Jukebox” sales jumped 164%, according to Billboard. There were also boosts in record sales immediately following Beyonce, Madonna, Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen.
So what will this mean for Katy Perry?
Bruno Mars’ “The Moonshine Jungle Tour” was already full swing before he played the Super bowl halftime show and the North American leg of the tour had an average ticket price on the secondary market of $210.00 per ticket. After the halftime show rose to almost $550.00 per ticket, beating out the likes of Beyonce with Jay Z at $200.00 per ticket, One Direction with a $256.00 per ticket, and Justin Timberlake who had a $195.00 per ticket. The Half Time Show put Bruno Mars at more than double any of his fellow top-ranking performers.
So what will this mean for Katy Perry? And her fans? Katy Perry Ticket Prices on the Secondary Market for her European leg of the tour that will resume after the Halftime Show have an average of $228.00 per ticket. We can expect her ticket prices to rise immediately after her performance. Katy Perry’s current Prismatic Tour had its second leg of the tour in North America from June 22nd – Oct 11th 2014 and hasn’t announced any more dates yet. But, if she uses the Super Bowl Halftime Show to promote more tour dates, you can expect to see a 161.90% rise in Katy Perry tickets in the secondary market based on the metric rise in Bruno Mars ticket prices on the secondary market after his.
