Ducks & Rangers are LA Kings Top Tickets of the week

After a solid Christmas week that included home victories over St. Louis, Arizona and San Jose, the Los Angeles Kings had a tough swing through Canada, followed by a Saturday night home matchup at STAPLES Center versus the Nashville Predators. The Kings lost three of four during the week, including overtime losses to the Predators and Edmonton Oilers. The week ended with a wild lost to Nashville, 7-6 in overtime, following a ferocious comeback from the Kings to tie the game.

Week Recap: The Kings kicked off the week with a trip to Calgary to take on the Flames, falling behind 2-0 on two first period goals from the Calgary Flames, a minute apart from Curtis Glencross and Markus Granlund. Tyler Toffoli scored in the second period to pull within a goal, but the Kings were unable to get another shot past Flames goaltender Jonas Hiller. Following the loss in Calgary the Kings made the trip north to Edmonton to complete the Alberta back-to-back, losing 3-2 to the Oilers in a shootout. Like the night before the Kings fell behind 2-0, coming back with third period goals from Drew Doughty and Jake Muzzin to tie the game and send it to overtime and then the shootout. The Oilers would prevail in the shootout, ending a nine-game losing streak. The Kings would preserve an all important road point, setting up the opportunity to pick up a victory in Vancouver to complete the three-game road trip on a positive note. The Kings prevailed in Vancouver by a 3-2 score with Justin Williams and Jarret Stoll scoring late to give the Kings a come from behind win. The victory overshadowed the fact that the Kings fell behind 2-0 in for the third consecutive game, coming from behind once again. The Kings comeback gave them three points on the road trip and send them back to STAPLES Center for a Saturday night matchup with the Predators on a winning note. In one of the wildest games of the NHL season the Kings would score first and then give up five unanswered goals to the Predators, eventually falling behind 6-3 on an Ollie Jokinen goals mid-way through the third period. Amazingly the Kings would storm back and score three times in the final two minutes of regulation to tie the score at 6-6 and send the game into overtime. The Kings expended effort likely contributed to their sudden loss when the Predators scored just 18 seconds into overtime.

Up Next for the Kings: The Kings have three days off before they host the New York Rangers at STAPLES Center on Thursday in a Stanley Cup rematch. The Kings defeated the Rangers in six games last summer to win their second Stanley Cup title in three seasons. The Kings complete the week with another game at STAPLES Center on Saturday, January 10 when they host the Winnipeg Jets.

Where They Stand: With 47 points the Kings are in 5th place in the Western Conference, tied with the Vancouver Canucks. They are eleven points behind the Anaheim Ducks, who lead both the Western Conference and the Pacific Division.

Rangers & Jets Top Ducks Tickets Of The Week

After dropping their first game of the week to the San Jose Sharks, the Anaheim Ducks rallied back and won consecutive games over two solid teams, defeating the St. Louis Blues and Nashville Predators by identical 4-3 scores. With another successful week the Ducks extended their lead in the Pacific Division and the Western Conference.

Week Recap: The Ducks hosted the San Jose Sharks on New Year’s Eve at Honda Center, losing 3-0 behind a shutout from Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi, his third of the season. Joe Pavelski scored twice for the Sharks, his 18th and 19th goals of the season. Corey Perry returned to the Ducks lineup but, like the rest of the Ducks, was unable to find the back of the net. After a day off on Thursday the Sharks hosted the St. Louis Blues on Friday night, winning 4-3 in a hard fought game. Ryan Getzlaf, Kyle Palmieri, Andrew Cogliano and Matt Beleskey scored for the Ducks, with Beleskey picking up his team leading 16th of the season. It was the 16th victory by just a goal in the last 18 Anaheim wins. The Ducks continued their homestand on Sunday night when they hosted the Nashville Predators. Nashville was coming off of a wild 7-6 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Kings the night before. Matt Beleskey opened the scoring for Anaheim with his 17th goal of the season in the first period, with Corey Perry notching his 15th goal in the second period in his third game back from injury. The Predators would go up 3-2 before Francois Beauchemin scored his second goal of the season to tie the game at three. The game would go into overtime with the Ducks eventually prevailing in the shootout on goals by Jakob Silfverberg and Ryan Kesler. Frederik Andersen made 27 saves to earn the victory in goal. The Danish goaltender now has 21 victories on the season.

Up Next for the Ducks: The Ducks have a busy upcoming week with home games versus the New York Rangers, Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Maple Leafs and New Jersey Devils. The culmination of the 8-game home stand is a prime opportunity to gain additional ground in both the division and the Western Conference. If the season ended today the Maple Leafs, Rangers and Jets are all in solid playoff positioning, with the Jets off to their best start since the franchise relocated to Winnipeg in 2010.

Where They Stand: With 58 points the Ducks lead the Pacific Division and the Western Conference. They have a four point lead on the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators for the top record in the National Hockey League.

With a perfect 3-0 record over the past week the Anaheim Ducks have now run their consecutive game winning streak to eight, including three consecutive road wins versus Eastern Conference foes. The eight game winning streak has vaulted the Ducks to the top overall record in the National Hockey League. Anaheim now has 57 points on the season, one point above the defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks.

Week Recap: After winning five consecutive games at the friendly confines of Honda Center the Ducks kicked off the week with an impressive 5-2 victory over perennial powers Detroit. After Thomas Jurco opened the scoring for Detroit the Ducks scored four unanswered first period goals. Jakob Silfverberg, Nick Bonino, Corey Perry and Sami Vatananen all tallied first period goals for Anaheim. Saku Koivu opened the scoring in the second period to give the Ducks in insurmountable 5-1 lead. Perry’s goal was his 22nd on the season. Three days later the Ducks made the trip to New Jersey and defeated the Devils by a 3-2 score in overtime. Cam Fowler and Mathieu Perrault scored the two regulation goals for Anaheim before Kyle Palmieri notched the game-winner in overtime, his 5th of the season. Jonas Hiller was solid in net once again for the Ducks, running his season record to 15-4-4. After defeating the Devils on Friday the Ducks made the trip to Long Island for the second half of a back-to-back versus the Islanders, winning 5-3. After falling behind 3-1 the Ducks exploded for four goals in the third period, with Ryan Getzlaf slotting home his 18th and 19th goals of the season. Mathieu Perrault and Kyle Palmieri scored scored the other two third period goals for Anaheim. Rookie Frederik Andersen was victorious in between the pipes, running his season record to 7-1.

Honda Center

The Week Ahead: The Ducks have a light schedule over the Christmas Holidays with a game Monday night followed by four days off before they host the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night at the Honda Center. After Saturday night’s game the Ducks head to the Bay Area for a big Sunday night matchup versus the San Jose Sharks. The Ducks are looking to keep pace with their cross-town rivals, the Los Angeles Kings. Even with an 8-game winning streak the Ducks are just three points up on the Kings who have won nine of their last ten.

Where they stand: With 57 points the Ducks are a point ahead of the Chicago Blackhawks for the top overall record in the National Hockey League. They are in a tight race for best record in the Pacific Division with the Los Angeles Kings. As of Monday the Ducks are three points on top of the red hot Kings. In all the two Los Angeles teams have just one loss in their last 20 games played.

THE STORY: The Los Angeles Kings are a win away from their first Stanley Cup title – and they’ll have the Staples Center crowd on their side as they look to complete the sweep Wednesday against the New Jersey Devils. The Kings are coming off what may have been their best game of the postseason, a 4-0 victory highlighted by Jonathan Quick’s third shutout of the playoffs. The young netminder is considered the odds-on favorite to take home the Conn Smythe Trophy if the Kings finish off the Devils in Game 4.

ABOUT THE DEVILS: Nothing is going right for New Jersey, which now needs to post four consecutive victories against one of the most dominant teams in playoff history. Even veteran netminder Martin Brodeur, who appeared to have turned back the clock in the first three series but stopped just 17 of 21 shots in Game 3. The Devils had their chances to generate offense in Monday’s defeat, but finished 0-for-6 on the power play. That included a stretch of 5-on-3 hockey that lasted more than a minute. “We’ve got to win four straight,” said Devils forward Zach Parise. “That’s our approach. Win the next one. That’s all we can do.”

ABOUT THE KINGS: Los Angeles has taken a level-headed approach to the postseason, and being a game away from the most coveted award in pro hockey hasn’t changed anything. “We can’t take anything for granted,” said Kings defenseman Drew Doughty. “It could have been two-nothing for them before (Game 3).” Special teams was the difference Monday night, as the Kings killed off all six New Jersey man advantage opportunities while going 2-for-2 on the power play. The second statistic is more notable, given that Los Angeles had gone five games without scoring a man-advantage goal.

OVERTIME:

1. The Kings are the first team to take a 3-0 lead in each series since the playoffs expanded to four best-of-seven rounds.

2. The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs are the only team in NHL history to rally from a 3-0 deficit to win the Stanley Cup.

3. A win in any of the next four games would make Los Angeles the first No. 8 seed to capture a Stanley Cup title.

With another bout of road dominance behind them, the Los Angeles Kings find themselves halfway to their first Stanley Cup championship as they host the New Jersey Devils in Monday’s Game 3. The Kings gained the upper hand in the best-of-seven series with identical 2-1 overtime victories in Games 1 and 2. Jeff Carter was the hero Saturday night as his turnaround wrist shot beat Martin Brodeur and improved the Kings to 10-0 on the road in the playoffs.

ABOUT THE DEVILS: New Jersey players were saying all the right things after dropping a second straight heartbreaker, but history is clearly against the club as the series shifts to Los Angeles. Only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1959 Montreal Canadiens have come back to win the Stanley Cup after dropping the first two games at home. Forward Ryan Carter, who scored in Game 2, says his team may not be as dominant away from home as the Kings have been – but it hasn’t been a slouch, either. “We’ve been a strong road team all year,” he said. “If we play our game we feel we can win on any sheet of ice, home or away.”

Outside of the early-season trip to Los Angeles, the Devils only ventured as far west as Edmonton, Calgary and Phoenix, all of which fall in the Mountain Time zone. They played the two other California clubs – Anaheim and San Jose – at home and also hosted the Vancouver Canucks in their only meeting this year.

ABOUT THE KINGS: Prior history benefits Los Angeles in at least one other way. Saturday’s win made the Kings just the fourth team ever to take a 2-0 lead in all four of their post-season series (1981 New York Islanders, 1988 Edmonton Oilers, 2008 Detroit Red Wings). All three of those teams went on to prevail in the Stanley Cup. Yet, despite having a sizable lead, Kings forward Justin Williams says he and his teammates aren’t settling in. “We’re not satisfied as of yet,” he said. “We came here and we accomplished what we wanted to do here. We won two games. Now we’re going to try to win in front of the hometown fans.”

OVERTIME:

1. New Jersey is just 1-5 in postseason series in which it has dropped the first two games, prevailing only against the Boston Bruins in 1994.

2. Eight different Kings have scored game winners so far in the postseason, led by captain Dustin Brown with three.

3. The Devils’ top three scorers – Zach Parise, Ilya Kovalchuk and Travis Zajac – are a combined minus-12 in the playoffs.

KINGS 2, DEVILS 1 (OT): Jeff Carter’s goal 13:42 into overtime lifted visiting Los Angeles to a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup finals.

Following extended pressure in the New Jersey zone, Carter gathered the puck at the side of the New Jersey net, skated out to the top of the circles and wristed a shot that beat Devils netminder Martin Brodeur on the short side.

The win improves Los Angeles to 10-0 on the road in the postseason – and more importantly, sends the Kings back to California with a two-game lead in the best-of-seven as they seek their first Stanley Cup title.

Trailing 1-0 after 40 minutes, the Devils finally drew even 2:59 into the third period. Ryan Carter situated himself in the high slot and redirected a Marek Zidlicky point shot past Kings netminder Jonathan Quick for his fifth goal of the postseason.

The teams exchanged chances until late in regulation, when the Devils missed a golden chance to even the series as Ilya Kovalchuk rang a shot off the crossbar with 19 seconds remaining.

Quick stopped 32 shots to preserve the win. Brodeur made 30 saves in defeat.

Moments after killing off a New Jersey power play, the Kings jumped in front on a great individual effort by Drew Doughty. The superstar defenseman stickhandled from his own zone to the top of the left circle before unleashing a wrist shot that beat Martin Brodeur inside his right arm.

The Devils looked to draw even but couldn’t beat Quick, who stood his ground during two separate flurries in front of the Los Angeles net.

Los Angeles and New Jersey traded quality scoring chances early in the second, with Quick stopping Anton Volchenkov on a tricky shot from the top of the circles and Justin Williams wiring a wrist shot at the other end that Brodeur snagged with his glove.

Dainius Zubrus nearly broke the New Jersey deadlock later in the frame, but his redirection from point-blank range sailed just wide of the net. The Devils enjoyed a shorthanded break moments after that, but Quick tipped a Zach Parise pass intended for Travis Zajac just out of reach.

Quick made the save of the game with just over five minutes remaining in the period, stretching out his right leg to redirect a strange deflection on a Kings clearing attempt with the edge of his skate.

GAME NOTEBOOK: This is the first time the first two games of the Stanley Cup finals have gone to overtime since 1951, when the Montreal Canadiens opposed the Toronto Maple Leafs. The teams split the games. … The Kings went just 29-66 on the road in the playoffs from 1967-2011. … Carter scored just four times in 72 regular-season games between the Devils and Florida Panthers. … The Kings improved to 4-0 in overtime in the playoffs. The Devils dropped to 4-3.

It’s been a long season but finally the NHL is at its final home stretch, the Stanley Cup Finals.

The two teams that will be facing off in the finals are the Los Angeles Kings and the New Jersey Devils. Each team has defied the odds this post season as neither team had home ice advantage for any of its playoff series and neither was really given a legitimate chance at winning it all. Several weeks later and here both teams are, 4 wins away from the greatness they’ve been trying to achieve all season. Which team will win it all though?

During the regular season these 2 teams faced off twice back in October, once in New Jersey and once in Los Angeles. Unfortunately for the Kings, both of these games resulted in losses, however each team was completely different back then as the Kings had yet to acquire Jeff Carter and were still operating under former coach Terry Murray. The Devils on the other hand were still discovering who they were after an awful 10-11 season.

For the first time since 1999, the Stanley Cup will be won by a team whose captain is American as both the Kings (Dustin Brown, NY) and Devils (Zach Parise, MN) were born in the U.S.

The winner of this series will be the lowest seeded team since the NHL adopted the 16 team playoff format back in 1994 to win the Stanley Cup. Currently the lowest seeded team to ever win it all was the New Jersey Devils as a #5 seed.

If the Kings win it all they will be the 4th consecutive team to start the season in Europe and win it all.

The Kings have won an NHL record 10 consecutive playoff games on the road (dating back to last season) and will look to extend that streak as they will start the series off on the road in New Jersey.

The puck will drop at the Prudential Center in New Jersey on Wednesday May 30th at 8:00 pm Eastern as the series will get underway.

The Stanley Cup Final matches two teams that haven’t met for 7 months. This will be the first-ever playoff series between The Los Angeles Kings and the New Jersey Devils. In the regular season, the New Jersey Devils defeated the Kings once in regulation and once in a shootout.

The Los Angeles Kings have geared up for a lengthy playoff series in every single round of the postseason, but they haven’t even had to play a Game 6.

New Jersey and Los Angeles met twice in the regular season, both games coming in October (13th and 25th). The Kings lost to the Devils, 2-1, in a shootout October 13 in Newark, having just returned to the United States after starting the regular season with two games in Europe. The Devils won, 3-0 at Staples Center, October 25.

Both teams have elite goaltenders playing at elite levels right now.

Whoever won the 2012 Stanley Cup, the Devils or Kings, will be the lowest seed in the history of the NHL to do so. There’s no doubt that this matchup is between the two most popular teams in the sport. Kings have gone on a 12-2 rampage through the playoffs and earned a date with the Devils in the Stanley Cup finals, which begin Wednesday.
