With spring training just over thirty days away, thoughts are turning to baseball season. While two of the three teams in Southern California made major moves during the offseason, the Los Angeles Angels have been pretty quiet in the offseason. After a dominating regular season that ended in a disappointing American League Division Series loss to the Kansas City Royals, the Angels have opted to make just minor moves in the offseason, avoiding the big free agent splash signings they’ve made in recent years. With the heart of the team returning from a year ago, including the best player in baseball Mike Trout, the Angels are primed for another division title and a run towards the playoffs. The big question on the minds of Angels fans is whether they’ve done enough to make a deep playoff run. Here’s a look at the Angels offseason and some potential questions.

Who’s at second? In opting to trade Howie Kendrick to the Los Angeles Dodgers the Angels said goodbye to one of their most consistent performers who was coming off of one of the better seasons of his career. Josh Rutledge, who the Angels acquired from the Colorado Rockies will compete for the job, as will Taylor Featherston, Johnny Giavotella and Grant Green. Kendrick formed a wonderful double play combination with shortstop Erick Aybar, generally playing solid defense and hitting around .300 with a penchant for clutch hits. Whoever replaces Kendrick, they’ll have big shoes to fill.

When will Garrett Richards return? According to his agent, the Angels right-hander, who suffered a season-ending knee injury on August 20, will be ready by the start of the regular season. Richards was given clearance to throw on December 5, and started running on January 1. By the end of January he should be throwing off the mound and resuming “light” baseball activities. The return of the Angels ace is vital to their chances next season. The big right-hander had a breakout season in 2014, finishing with a 13-6 record to go with a 2.60 ERA. Richards was an American League Cy Young candidate before injuring his knee while covering first base at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. It will be a major boost if the Angels ace is ready to start the regular season. If not the rest of the rotation, including Matt Shoemaker, Jered Weaver and Hector Santiago will need to perform well to make up for the absence of Richards.

The Josh Hamilton Saga: Three off-seasons ago the Angels signed Josh Hamilton to a massive free agency contract. The former All-Star hasn’t lived up to his contract, struggling greatly while also dealing with injury. With a whopping three years and $83 million left on his contract the Angels are limited in their ability to trade Hamilton. The 34-year-old is clearly declining and not the player the Angels had in mind when they signed him three summers ago. The dilemma now for the Angels is what to do with Hamilton. If they could find a trade partner willing to take on his contract the best move for the Angels would be to deal Hamilton. Unfortunately, due to the massive contract remaining, that is unlikely.
