With one more month until the 2016 NBA playoffs start, the race in both the East and West is as close as ever. The 8th and the 9th seed in the East are separated by half a game, with the 6th seed also only two games in front of the 9th seed. In the West, the difference between the 8th and 9th seed is only two games, making the stretch run extremely interesting. Here are six teams that should become more and more interesting as the 2016 NBA playoffs approach.
Detroit Pistons
The Pistons went all in at the trade deadline, getting Tobias Harris from Orlando Magic to form a “mini Big-Three” with Drummond, Reggie Jackson and Harris. And while some people expected quick results, in reality, Detroit is playing 50% basketball since the trade. But that might be a good thing. The good news for the Pistons is they have only seven more games on the road. But the bad news is they have lots of games against direct competition, starting with two games against the Wizards, a game against Chicago, two against the Hornets, and then some against higher tier Eastern teams: 2 against Atlanta, two against Miami, and one against Cleveland. The Wizards game are crucial since Washington leads the season series 2:0, and one more win will ensure the Wizards the tiebreaker. The Blazers will likely make the playoffs, but staying at 6th spot gives them a chance against an OKC team that doesn’t look as scary as the Warriors and Spurs. This will a second game of a back-to-back set, so Kobe might not be playing. Even if Kobe doesn’t play, city rivalry between the Lakers and the Clippers is more interesting in recent years, particularly with the rise of the Clippers and the downfall of the Lakers. And since they meet just twice during the regular season, watching them on Christmas makes it that much more special.

The Cavs at Warriors matchup is the highlight of the NBA Christmas day schedule. This will be the first time the two teams meet after the Finals, and this time, the Cavs might be healthy. With Love, James, Irving, Curry, Thompson, Green and Iguodala, there are more than enough stars on the floor to entice your attention. Toss in Lebron’s motivation for revenge, and this might turn into a playoff atmosphere game, if not Finals atmosphere. By Christmas, we might even know the roster for Team USA, and both Curry and Irving compete for a spot. If one of them doesn’t make the cut, he will definitely have a reason more to go at the other.
Houston Rockets vs. San Antonio Spurs 8:00PM ET
The battle for supremacy between Texas teams is one of the most interesting and intriguing in the league. The Christmas Day schedule will take us to Houston, where the Rockets will welcome the new, refreshed Spurs team that is hoping to get back to the Finals. The Rockets have the same goal in mind, with this being a crucial year for them as Dwight Howard is nearing free agency. The Rockets have their own Big Three in Howard, Harden and Ty Lawson. And if Lawson manages to keep his head in the game, the race to the division title in the Southwest division might be one for the ages.

The Warriors and the Cavaliers are two teams that are in top 5 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. The Warriors defence has been mediocre in the first round, but the team has picked it up since then. They have won a few games thanks to their defence. And they still have the best offence in the playoffs, tied with the Cavs at 107 points per 100 possessions. Out of the four remaining teams, only the Houston Rockets allow 100+ points per game. The Hawks are great defensively, but their offence is not clicking, scoring just 101 points per 100 possessions with lower efficiency than the Warriors and the Cavs.

Deron Williams: Williams averaged only 14.3 points per game and 6.1 assists per game this season with the Brooklyn Nets Opening Day. These numbers would be great for a point guard coming off the bench, but Williams is a starter and making almost $20 million a season. The Nets would be better off trading him, but Williams’s huge contract and dismal performance make him very unattractive to potential teams.
Chandler Parsons: For a small forward making about $14 million a season, 16.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and four assists per game just does not cut it. Parsons simply does not produce well enough to earn the money he is making. There is a reason the Houston Rockets got rid of him this season despite having the cap room to be able to keep him.
Josh Smith: Smith has been in the NBA for 10 seasons, yet his style of play has not improved at all. Smith shoots less than 30 per cent from beyond the arc and less than 55 per cent from the free throw line. That’s right—Smith makes over $13 million a season, and he can barely hit a free throw.
Dwight Howard: Howard puts up great numbers pretty consistently with the Houston Rockets, but what he lacks is leadership. Howard does not seem to have the passion and drive to lead a team to a championship. The Rockets have a good team, but they lack the veteran leadership that Howard is expected to provide. Until he gets an attitude adjustment, Howard will never be a legend.
Tony Allen: Allen may be one of the best defenders in the NBA, but he simply cannot play offence. He is a big reason for the Memphis Grizzles offensive struggles this past season. Allen averaged only 9 points per game this past season while making less than 25 per cent of his three-point shots and only 62.8 per cent of his free throws.
O.J. Mayo: Mayo brought nothing but confrontations with the head coach and sub-par effort to the Milwaukee Bucks this season. Mayo averaged under 12 points a game and was unhappy with his new team. Hopefully, a new coach and the addition of Jabari Parker will encourage Mayo to try a little harder this season.
Carmelo Anthony: Anthony is without a doubt a fascinating player to watch, and the fans in New York will undoubtedly continue to fill the stands to see him play. However, Anthony is about to make $22 million this coming season; and he has a hard time leading his team to the playoffs. Anthony puts up massive numbers, but until he steps up as a leader on the Knicks, the team will continue to lose.
