British alternative rock group Coldplay is one of the best selling acts in the world, having sold fifty-five million albums worldwide. Founded in 1996 by lead singer Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland, the group went through several name changes and added to the line up Guy Berryman on bass and Will Champion as drummer. Manager Phil Harvey has been with the group since day one and is often referred to as the unofficial fifth member.
Coldplay songs killed the charts in 2011. Scoring Top Rock Album of 2011, Mylo Xyloto was the bands fifth album. It sold over 900,000 copies in the U.K. alone. In the bands sixteen year history, they have been nominated for an astounding one hundred twenty eight awards by various music award associations and have won forty five; seven of which have been Grammy Award wins. Coldplay most recently won the 2012 Brit Award for Best British Group; they were nominated for three Grammy’s at the 2012 Grammy Awards, as well as nominated for three MTV Music Awards in 2012, and three more nominations for 2012.
In spite of the band’s mega success worldwide, their most recent album to drop, Mylo Xyloto, it is somewhat comical that the lead singer regrets naming his album “after two words that couldn’t even be Googled”. Unfortunately, that means the majority of his fans cannot pronounce it either. Coldplay is notorious for their brilliant global marketing efforts. They are highly involved in charities and various causes and they exquisitely maintain the sensitive balance between rock and roll fame and pushing political, environmental, and other noble causes.
With a never ending lineup of shows in the books, Coldplay hasn’t taken a break in ages it seems. Coldplay took a small break from December 2010 until beginning performances again in June 2011. Since then Coldplay has performed in forty-eight shows and display no signs of slowing down. Coldplay is scheduled for another fifty-nine concerts throughout the globe with their last scheduled show to take place September 22, 2012 in Hannover, Germany.
