National Participation:
A total of 291 NCAA member schools have Division I Softball programs and may participate in the national championship. Softball student-athletes from all 291 schools can participate in the program.
Selection Process:
The Division I Softball Championship is a 64-team tournament held at the end of May to crown the best softball team in the country. Of the 64 teams, 32 will qualify automatically, and the remaining 32 will be picked on an at-large basis by the Division I Softball Committee. The field will be divided into 16 groups, and one of them will be at a regional site.
Selection Show:
The NCAA Division I Softball Championship bracket will be revealed during the Selection Show.
Regionals:
The NCAA Division I Softball Championship will be held at 16 university sites during the regionals. At each campus, a four-team double-elimination tournament will be held, with the 16 winning teams proceeding to the Super Regionals.
Super Regionals:
The NCAA Division I Softball Championship will be held at eight university campuses in the Super Regionals. At each location, two teams compete in a best-of-three tournament. The winners from each site proceed to the NCAA Women’s College World Series.
Women’s College World Series:
The NCAA Women’s College World Series will be hosted at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, where it has been since 1971. The eight teams will compete in a double-elimination bracket, with the two finalists going head-to-head in a best of three series. The annual NCAA Division I Softball Championship has been played at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City for years.
With larger audiences than ever before, the Women’s College World Series consistently exceeds expectations. The games are played in sessions with two games per session, with the exception of best-of-three series and if-needed sessions.
The dugout area at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex is made out of clay, has a dirt infield and a grass outfield surface with dimensions of 200 feet down the lines and 220 feet to center field, and each team’s supporters may sit behind their respective dugouts.
The atmosphere at the Women’s College World Series begins as soon as the University teams arrive in Oklahoma City. On the day before the tournament begins, visitors can attend Open Practice Day at the facility, which is free of charge.
During the day all teams will showcase the abilities and talents that helped them reach the final 8. There are typically autograph sessions throughout the day by members of the USA Softball team.
The Women’s College World Series fan fest begins on the second day. The fan fest is outside the stadium and is located at the drop-off/pick-up point for fans who use the parking shuttles. The WCWS Fan Fest is a family-friendly event open to fans of all ages! Participate in a variety of events, including special ESPN autograph sessions and activities, as well as sporting activations and product showcases, championship products, and more!
With activities for the whole family, you’ll be right in the thick of it all when it comes to softball fun.
The WCWS, however, is far more than a social gathering. The games themselves are where the tournament transforms into an extraordinary experience. Every inning seems to get exciting as the softball teams compete.
There is in-stadium entertainment throughout the day, with competitions like minor league baseball games thrown in. The United States Women’s National Softball Team players in the crowd are recognized during games, and they interact with fans.
There’s also a lot of history in the form of WCWS quizzes on the video board, allowing fans to relive previous Women’s College World Series contests. The fans here just simply love softball, and the energy that is created is one of the best atmospheres in all of sports.
