Kings Look To Extinguish Flames & Catch A Shark This Week

After dropping a tough game to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Kings had lost five of six games and were struggling to stay in early playoff contention. The Blues loss was the third consecutive loss for the Kings, but the defending Stanley Cup Champions rebounded to win their final two games of the week, repaying the Blues with a victory at STAPLES Center and then defeating the Arizona Coyotes. With the two victories, the Kings hold down the 8th playoff position in the Western Conference, tied with the Vancouver Canucks.

Week Recap: Tuesday night the Kings jumped on top of the Blues in St. Louis 2-0 nothing on two first period goals from Marian Gaborik before the Blues rallied back behind a big game from Vladimir Tarasenko. The Russian forward continued his torrid goal-scoring pace with a hat trick to put the Kings away. After falling behind by two goals the Blues scored the next five goals to win going away. After a night off the Kings welcomed the Blues to STAPLES Center for a return trip on Thursday night. The Kings won 6-4 behind a massive game from Kings center Anze Kopitar. The Slovenian had a goal and four assists, while Marian Gaborik had two goals and an assist. After a slow start to the season, both Gaborik and Kopitar are heating up of late, something that bodes well for the near future. Besides Kopitar and Gaborik, Jeff Carter, Jake Muzzin, and Dwight Kings also scored goals for Los Angeles. The story of the game was the King’s third-period outburst. After trailing 4-3 heading into the period Los Angeles scored three goals in the third to blow the game open. The Kings won their second consecutive home game on Saturday night when they defeated the Arizona Coyotes behind another strong performance from San Jose Sharks. Los Angeles will look to keep their momentum at home before they head off on the road the following week to kick off a three-game road trip. The Kings are currently in a battle for a playoff position in the conference and division and will need to maximize their effort as the calendar turns to the new year.

Where They Stand: The Kings are in 8th place in the Western Conference, tied with the Vancouver Canucks. They are nine points behind the Anaheim Ducks, who lead the conference and the Pacific Division.
