Robert James Miller was born on October 12, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois.

Bob Miller received his degree in communication studies from the University of Iowa in 1960.

While at the University of Iowa, he began his broadcasting career at the campus radio station KRUI-FM covering the school’s football teams and basketball teams games.

In 1960 after graduation, in Wisconsin Bob started working in television sports journalism. Miller would begin announcing for the football team as well as the hockey team at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

In 1973, Roy Storey left the Kings after one year of being their play-by-play announcer.

The owner of the Kings Jack Kent Cooke hired Robert James Miller to become the new Kings play-by-play announcer.

Bob Miller and his King’s broadcast partner Jim Fox were originally not allowed to call any potential Kings’ Stanley Cup Finals games due to an NHL and NBC exclusive agreement.

But due to Bob Millers and Jim Fox’s overwhelming popularity among Los Angeles Kings fans, management had both Miller and Fox record their call of the potential Kings clinching games for later distribution.

Miller’s LA Kings broadcast partners have included color analyst Rich Marotta, Dan Avey (1972 to 1976), Pete Weber, who is now the current radio broadcast voice of the NHL’s Nashville Predators.

Nick Nickson since 1981 who is radio play-by-play announcer for the Kings and was the voice LA Kings fans heard on the radio when they won they’re first ever Stanley Cup in 2012, and again in 2014 when Los Angeles won its second Stanley Cup.

Bob Miller wrote two books every Kings fan should read. Tales From the Los Angeles Kings in 2006 and Tales From The Los Angeles Kings Locker Room in 2013.

On March 2, 2017, Bob Miller announced his retirement as the Kings play-by-play announcer due to health reasons.

Miller had been the Los Angeles Kings play-by-play announcer for 44 years and called 3,351 Kings NHL games.

Bob Millers called his last LA Kings home game on April 8, 2017, against the Chicago Blackhawks.

The last away game he did play-by-play for was on April 9, 2017, against the Anaheim Ducks.

In 2000, Bob Miller was honored by the Hockey Hall of Fame with the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award.

Bob is inducted into the Los Angeles Kings Hall of Fame as well as having a Staples Center press box named in his honor.

On Saturday, July 22 Bob Miller received the Los Angeles Area Governors Award from Television Academy during the Emmy Awards.
