The roll continues for the Anaheim Ducks. After starting the week with an uncharacteristic home loss to the Winnipeg Jets, their first loss at Honda Center this season, the Ducks swept consecutive games with their Southern California rivals, the Los Angeles Kings. Thursday night’s win at Honda Center and Saturday’s victory in the first ever outdoor game at Dodger Stadium has given the Ducks a seven point lead on the Chicago Blackhawks for the top overall record in hockey. Week Recap: The Ducks returned home Tuesday night after a tough road swing to face the scrappy Winnipeg Jets. Cam Fowler opened the scoring for the Ducks just four minutes into the first period, only to see Winnipeg storm back on goals by Blake Wheeler, Andrew Ladd and Evander Kane to take a 3-1 lead. Nick Bonino would score his 16th of the season to pull the Ducks within a goal, but Anaheim was unable to solve the Jets further. The loss was the first home defeat of the season for the Ducks. Repeating the form they’ve shown all season the Ducks swept consecutive games versus the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday and Saturday. The Saturday game, the first ever outdoor game at Dodger Stadium, was won by the Ducks 3-0. Jonas Hiller shut out Los Angeles for his 20th career shutout while Corey Perry, Matt Beleskey and Andrew Cogliano scored for the Ducks, with Perry scoring his 28th goal of the year. The win was the 21st victory in 24 games for the Ducks, who’ve taken a commanding lead in the Pacific Division.
The Week Ahead: The Ducks have an opportunity to extend their league-leading record with three games at home this week, Tuesday versus Minnesota, Thursday versus the Philadelphia Flyers and Saturday versus the Dallas Stars. All three teams are either out of the playoff race or fringe playoff contenders. The Wild, who are currently in 7th place in the Western Conference, feature are led by forward Zach Parise and defenseman Ryan Suter. After a rough start the Philadelphia Flyers have rebounded and are currently tied for 8th in the Eastern Conference with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Philadelphia is led by Claude Giroux, one of the top centers in the league. Giroux leads Philadelphia with 47 points on the season. The Ducks play just one road game in their six games leading up to the Sochi Olympic games.
Where they stand: With 83 points the Ducks have the top overall record in hockey, seven points up on the Chicago Blackhawks for top overall record in the Western Conference and the National Hockey League. Anaheim is nine points up on the suddenly hot San Jose Sharks in the Pacific Division. San Jose has won their last six games.
