Born in Mikwaukee , Wisconsin on March 12, 1940 as Alwyn Lopez Jarreau, his passion for music started at a young age. It was almost out of birth that he started belting out his own tune in the church choir, and sang here and there with a small town group, the Indigos. Al Jarreau didn't go all the way with music at first. He decided he wanted to go to college, and that he did as he graduated from Ripon College with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. But AL Jarreau's education didn't stop there, as he went on to earn his masters in Vocational Rehabilitation from the University of Iowa .

It wasn't until Al Jarreau joined forces with guitarist Julio Martinez that his talent started to get noticed on a larger level than just his hometown and church folks. Soon enough people were falling in love with the duo, and they decided to take their at on down to Los Angeles . Al Jarreau started to get major gigs through all sorts of outlets from performances at The Improv between the acts of comedy rock stars such as Bette Midler and John Beluchi to the LA hot spot the Troubadour.

Al Jarreau picked up a sweet deal with pianist Tom Canning in 1975, and through this he was spotted by Warner Bros. From here it was to the moon for Al Jarreau. He signed with Warner and released his studio album debut, We Got By . Audiences all over the globe fell in love with Jarreau, and he went on to win a German Grammy Award for the debut album.

His second album release, Glow , gained Al Jarreau yet another German Grammy. Jarreau was conquering the music world by storm, and from there it only launched into a multitude of award winning releases and performances. 1978 brough Jarreau his first Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for Look To The Rainbow and he took the same Grammy for the same category home the next year for All Fly Home .
