More on the Kodak Theater
The Kodak Theatre, the anchor of Los Angeles' new Hollywood & Highland destination site, is Southern California's new home for the best in fine arts, live theatre, concerts, award shows and special events.
The theater, which will be home to the annual Academy Awards ceremonies, opened in November of 2001 and hosted it's first Academy Awards Presentation five months later.
One of the most ambitious real estate developments in the world, Hollywood & Highland is the catalyst for a renaissance that is taking place in Hollywood. Hollywood & Highland, located at that intersection in Hollywood, combines over 70 world-class retailers, a six-screen expansion of the historic Grauman's Chinese Theatre, and a new 640-room Renaissance Hollywood Hotel with a hip, mid-century modern design.
Designed with the Academy Awards® broadcast in mind, the Kodak Theatre is the crown jewel of the Hollywood & Highland® entertainment complex. Located at the intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave., the complex features a press area in the hotel for 1,500 journalists and a 40,000 square-foot Grand Ballroom catered by Wolfgang Puck.
Inside the Kodak Theatre
Kodak Theatre's seating capacity is 3,400 with three balcony levels that bring audiences close to the theatre stage, which measures 113 feet wide and 60 feet deep. There are also 24 theatre boxes with four to six seats each.
The theater interior is highlighted by a "tiara," a striking oval that is intertwined by smaller ovals, coated in silver leaf, that is the main interior design element. Its models are classical and modern: the floor pattern of Michelangelo's Campidoglio in Rome, and the ever-expanding shapes of Busby Berkeley's choreography. The tiara while decorative serves to hide catwalks and lighting positions for the theater's legitimate productions.
A grand spiral staircase connects four lobby levels and the lobby walls sparkle with thousands of glass beads which are designed to mimic early motion picture projection screens. The theatre includes a unique "media cockpit," in the center of the orchestra seating that during live broadcasts, contains television cameras and other equipment
Kodak Theatre Design
The Kodak Theatre was designed by the internationally-renowned Rockwell Group. David Rockwell's award-winning architecture firm's best-known commissions include the W New York and W Union Square, Nobu in New York, Emeril Lagasse's restaurant in New Orleans, Coca-Cola Skyfield at Turner Field in Atlanta, and the Mohegan Sun Casino and Project Sunburst. Mr. Rockwell also facilitated the renovation of Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
The four levels of the Kodak Theatre lobby are adorned with 26 black-and-white photographs of various Academy Awards® Ceremonies selected from the Academy's Roddy McDowell Photographic Archive. The giant transparencies were toned sepia, laminated to clear Plexiglas and hung in front of glass-beaded panels that adorn the lobby walls. The images measure 4 ft. wide x 5 ft. high and feature such OSCAR® winners as Grace Kelly, Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Halle Berry, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.
Other Events
In addition to the Academy Awards® Ceremonies, the Kodak Theatre hosts concerts, plays, televised shows and live theatrical events. Since opening in November 2001, some of the world's most famous faces have performed on the Kodak Theatre stage, including Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney, Cher, Sting, Prince, Celine Dion, the Dixie Chicks, Santana, Paul Newman, Julia Roberts, Jack Nicholson, Goldie Hawn, among others. Numerous nationally televised specials have emanated from the theater.
The Kodak Theatre has hosted The Nutcracker, Sesame Street Live, Moscow Stanislavsky Ballet and Blues Clues, and is also a cultural center that has featured artistic performances for the Chinese, Korean, Persian, Armenian and Russian communities
