How long is Wicked?
Wicked the Musical runs 2 hours and 45 minutes which includes one 15 minute intermission during the show. Act 1 runs 1 hour and 30 minutes while act 2 runs one hour.
What ages should see Wicked?
Wicked is recommended for ages 8 and up. While there is nothing in the Musical that is offensive ages under 8 might be too young to bring to a full length 2 hours and 45 minutes musical.
What is Wicked the Musical About?
For those of you who have always been intrigued by the Wizard of Oz, it is a delightful and interesting experience to learn about Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz, also known as Wicked the Musical, especially when you have the added entertainment asset of its being a fine musical.
The plot begins prior to and then continues after Dorothy arrives in Oz from Kansas. Two girlfriends, who became known as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West Elphaba, have opposing viewpoints and personalities, a rivalry over a love interest, political reactions to the corrupt government of the Wizard, and later you see Elphaba's public fall from grace.
A decade ago at its New York City premiere on October 30, 2003, Wicked initially got mixed reviews from critics and did not receive the Tony Award for Best Musical. However, it has become a top grossing and one of the most popular shows for families and especially young girls, has grossed over $3.1 billion worldwide as it has performed in more than 13 countries, and has been translated into five languages.
At Idina Menzel's second audition for Elphaba, her voice cracked badly on the high note in a main number, "Defying Gravity", and she went home in tears. However, she eventually got the part and won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role.
Wicked the musical has been deemed "The Best Musical of the Decade" by Entertainment!
Wicked was nominated for ten of the 2004 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Orchestration and twice for Best Leading Actress, for Menzel and Chenoweth. Menzel won the Best Actress award, and the show also won the Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design and Best Costume design, although it lost the Best Musical award to Avenue Q. In the same year, the show won six Drama Desk Awards out of eleven nominations, including in the Book, Director and Costume Design categories.
