Though it premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn , NJ on September 25 th 2011, the producers of the Newsies off-Broadway introduction Alan Menken and Harvey Fierstein had little doubt that it would lead to a full fledged Newsies Broadway adventure. Previews for the official Broadway adaptation began March 15 th and the grand opening debuted on March 29 th 2012. The original Newsies story opened up on April 10, 1992. Though it was not intended to be a musical, the original Newsies featured twelve songs and several choreographed dance sequences. The Newsies is based on the true story of the Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City . At the time the streets of New York were filled with thousands of orphaned boys selling newspapers to make money for food. They are living in the Newsboys living houses. The Newsies ringleader Jack Kelly is shaken when his father breaks his arm at work and being pre-uniion times, was let go with no pay. What ensues is the story of poverty, no unions, the industrial era New York and a city flooded with strikes. The Newsies must take a stance for themselves and going on strike is momentous.
