San Francisco Harding Park Golf Course: 2009 Presidents Cup is Unforgettable
The annual Presidents Cup at the Harding Park Municipal Golf Course in San Francisco , CA is a fairly new addition to events held in San Francisco . With its first competition taking place in 1994, the 2009 Presidents Cup has nearly doubled in attendance since its first year.
The Harding Park Municipal Golf Course, located directly across from San Francisco State University , opened July 18, 1925. It was named in honor of former President Warren G. Harding, who had passed away two years prior to opening day while visiting the City by the Bay. In its first decade of opening, the Harding Golf Course grew in popularity as it hosted numerous golf tournaments. Then, for nearly two decades, it hosted the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship from 1937 until 1956.
After the commencement of hosting such a prestigious event, the Harding Park Golf Course suffered in attendance. Due to a severe lack of funding, the once-famous park began to deteriorate. Finally, during the mid-90's, in an effort to rejuvenate the Harding Park Golf Course, a San Francisco lawyer named Sandy Tatum advocated for the refurbishing of the park. Thus was borne the Presidents Cup.
For over a decade now the President's Cup has brought the attention and funding needed to restore and maintain the Harding Park Municipal Golf Course to its former glory. Today we get ready to celebrate the 2009 Annual Presidents Cup, held at the Harding Park Municipal Golf Course once again after a three year hiatus to expand and repair the course.
