Brief Information about Golden Gate Theatre:

In 1922, when the Golden Gate Theatre first opened, its president M. Beck stated, "The Golden Gate is a great theatre. It will stand where it is for a long time. It is built of the best materials and it will be conducted to please the people who patronize it."

Opening Night — 1922

The Golden Gate boasted a stage measuring 50’X 33’. Patrons had clear sight lines to the stage even from the furthest seat in the balcony. Included in the theatre were a nursery, a tailor shop, and an animal room that would house such stars as Ran-Tin-Tin. Star dressing rooms were lavish and included private facilities. The cast dressing rooms would amply accommodate a company of over hundred members. The design allowed for a rehearsal as large as the stage. Adjacent to the orchestra pit were both a lounge and a library for members of the orchestra.

The War Years

Through World War II, the Golden Gate flourished presenting a succession of stars, among them Lena Horne, Mickey Rooney, George Burns The Marx Brothers, Jackie Cogan, Jack Benny, Ted Lewis, Josephine Baker, Carmen Miranda, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Lionel Hampton, and Aube Blake. Few name performers failed to play the Golden Gate. Frank Sinatra appeared there 3 times at the height of his bobbysoxer fame, and the crowds reached riot proportions.

The Decline

In 1966 when the popularity of the Cinerama fad began to decline, the Golden Gate Theatre was altered. The balcony was sealed off from the house, and served as a second room, making the Golden Gate Theatre a piggy-back theatre. The theatre had been so altered by "modernizations" that its splendor was only a memory. In 1972, when RKO finally closed the Golden Gate, there was reason to hope that it would ever again contribute to San Francisco's arts community. Fortunately, this was not to be the theatre's fate.

March 15, 1979

Armed with drawn blueprint, and original photographs, artisans from all aspect of the construction field were ready to start work. The drop ceiling that enclosed the lobby, the false wall that preserved off the upper balcony and the escalator adjacent to the lobby stairway was just a few the major structures that had to be removed.

Theatre in Progress

Almost 20 percent of the decoration surrounding the proscenium arch of the stage had been destroyed when the piggyback beam was installed. It took a crew of 10 men, 3 and half weeks to remove the truss beam. 10 tons of steel and 4 tons of plaster, sheet rock, studs and insulation had to be taken. The truss beam, which measured 118’ x 18’ & suspended the structural steel for the base, had to be cut into over a 1000 sections for removal. The balcony cinema, which had been re-stepped in order to alter the seating angles for the 2nd screen also, had to be returned to the original design. This involved tearing out over 4000 square feet of plywood.

As a key player in the Best of Broadway seasons since 1979, the Golden Gate Theatre has hosted stopping musicals like A Chorus Line, which re-opened the theatre on December 27, 1979 followed by Camelot with R. Burton, Sweeney Todd with A. Asbury, My Fair Lady with Rex Harrison, Bette Midler, Woman of the Year with Lauren Bacilli, 42nd Street, Cabaret, Zorbas with Anthony Quinn, Fiddler on the Roof with Tool, Stomp, Grease, Chicago, Rent, Hairspray and Moving' Out, among many more. This year the Golden Gate will host A. Lloyd Webber's newest production of Vita.
