Brief Information about San Diego Civic Theatre:

In 1965 the San Diego Civic Theatre opened. The opening performance featured the San Diego Symphony with soloists Dorothy Kirsten and Brian Sullivan. The evening's activities were co-hosted by the San Diego Opera Guild and the San Diego Symphony. Previous the concert were opening comments by J. Dallas Clark and Morley Golden. Since the San Diego Civic Theatre opening, the Civic Theatre has hosted many of the world's greatest talents in fields of opera, classical music, orchestras, dance, comedians, contemporary music, and Broadway. Additionally, it has served as a community gathering place for inaugurations, governmental addresses, religious services, political activities, lectures, educational presentations, and corporate meetings.

The 3,000 seat San Diego Civic Theatre is San Diego's main cultural venue. Elegant and plush, the San Diego Civic Theatre is the largest, most equipped performing arts theater in San Diego. The San Diego Civic Theatre is the home to San Diego Opera, California Ballet, La Jolla Chamber Music Society and the Netherlander Presentation and San Diego Playgoers Broadway Series. In 1965 the city of San Diego completed the San Diego Civic Theatre in the heart of downtown at the intersection of Third Avenue and B Street, and as a part of the inauguration of the building; San Diego Opera was founded in May that year. The company's first production was of Puccini's La Boheme. Adjacent to the San Diego Civic Theatre is Golden Hall, both of which are situated on the Civic Concourse, a central location in the city for public functions and small conventions and conferences.

In the San Diego Civic Center there are the San Diego Opera offices which are in the Civic Center Plaza, an 18-story office building located on the Concourse. Currently the San Diego Opera performs five operas each January through May in the San Diego Civic Theatre, plus concerts and recitals in the San Diego Opera Recital Series.
