Willits Second Spot in order

“To even get into this lineup is a big honor:” Reggie Willits, who’ve been recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake. “[Having Willits here] gives us a chance to get some guys off their feet,” said manager Mike Scioscia.

With Willits in left field and batting second in place of Gary Matthews Jr., what does that say about Matthews' slow start in the No. 2 hole? Scioscia chose to take the high road when asked pointedly about Matthews' reaction to his .229 batting average. “He just needs to get some rust off,” said Scioscia. “I still like the structure of our offense. If you look at the bumps in the road we've had, they haven't come so much from the offense.”

At the same time, Scioscia said, “Reggie Willits is a great guy to get in there and do what he does best.” Meaning he makes contact, draws walks, bunts, gets on base and creates havoc with his speed. “He has the ability to hit 9, 1, 2,” said Scioscia, “to get something going in front of your lineup.”

The Angels’ excess of riches in the outfield and the need to bring in a 12th pitcher, along with the understanding that Willits needed at-bats more than he needed to sit on the bench in the big leagues, allowed him to use his two weeks in the Pacific Coast League to put together a .313 batting mark. “Pinch-hit, pinch-run, give a guy a day of rest. I'm ready and willing to do whatever needs to be done,” said Willits.

According to Scioscia, Matthews' outlook has been in keeping with the understanding the two had during discussions last winter, i.e., that the outfielder would need to do what was best for the team -- thus hit in the No. 2 spot in the order. Scioscia reminded reporters that in spite of his recent difficulties, Matthews is useful at all three outfield positions and as a designated hitter. “He works hard every night,” said Scioscia. And as for his disposition while filling the second spot in the lineup, he added, “He does well with it. If your offense stalls, you're going to look at some things. I don't think it's stalled. We're just not running on all cylinders now.”

The automotive metaphor fit the pattern of the Angels' Monday-Thursday series with Oakland, in which they sandwiched 2-0 and 6-1 victories -- behind five-game winners Joe Saunders and Ervin Santana -- between being routed 14-2 and 15-8 in the first and last games. Against Oakland, Matthews was 0-for-3, 0-for-3, 0-for-4 and 1-for-3. “Down the road, Gary Matthews has the ability to knock in 100 runs in the spot he's in,” said Scioscia.

As the fans look forward to the plans of the team, manager Scioscia carefully evaluates the status of Angels and knows how he handles them in proper way.
