Will Maddux Retire?

Greg Maddux is one of the outstanding players in MLB. In fact, for 4 consecutive years, he was the first pitcher in Major League history to win the Cy Young Award in which he had a 75-29 record with a 1.98 ERA, while allowing less than one runner per inning.

Maddux was acquired by the LA Dodgers in 2006, when he was traded for the first time in his career. However, according to Scott Boras, Greg Maddux, who is currently a free agent, plans to retire from MLB. Boras addressed this issue as the first day of the General Managers Meetings started to wind down. Boras said that at the end of the season, Maddux told him that he intends not to play next year. Maddux, a 42-year old starting pitcher, was able to post a 355-227 record and a 3.16 ERA in his 23-year career. He was 11-14 in 35 postseason games, with 30 starts for Braves, Cubs and Dodgers.

For his 11 seasons from 1993 to 2003, Maddux was well-recognized as he pitched for the Braves, and teamed-up with fellow ace starters Tom Glavine, who recently had left elbow surgery and John Smoltz, who had right shoulder surgery this past season. Both could be at the end of their careers, although neither has publicly said what he intends to do next season. And if Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine retire this offseason, the three could be together again as part of the Hall of Fame class of 2014.

Greg Maddux was drafted in the second round of the 1984 amateur draft by the Cubs. He made his Major League debut in September 1986 and was considered the youngest player in the majors. Maddux returned to the Cubs as a free agent prior to the 2004 season. On August 7, 2004, Maddux defeated the Giants, 8-4, to garner his 300th career victory. In 2005, he beat Roger Clemens for his 306th victory in the First National League matchup between 300-game winners in 113 years. During the past few seasons, Maddux stayed focused and worked the plate with off-speed pitches to offset a fastball that had much movement but little heat. If Maddux retires, he will go out with 355 career regular-season victories, one more than Clemens, who has not officially retired but did not pitch this past season as he dealt with various legal issues regarding his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs. Furthermore, Boras was asked by the reporters if Maddux could change his mind before Spring Training opens in about 15 weeks.

“I don’t know,” Boras replied. “I think he was rather definitive about his statement and my belief from his point of view that he will retire.”

Greg Maddux is indeed one of the outstanding players in Major League Baseball. His fans hope that they can see more of him and more of the LA Dodgers team.
