Trumbo Works Hard

Mark Trumbo is a first baseman selected by the Angels of Anaheim in 19th-round Draft pick of 2004. Trumbo had a mid-90s fastball coming out of high school that was certainly seductive, but the raw power Trumbo displayed at the plate was simply too much to ignore.

Because of his potentials, the Angels of Anaheim moved the 6-foot-5 former hurler to first base and bided their time. Trumbo flashed some of that power through three seasons, hitting 37 homers in the Pioneer and Midwest Leagues, but he was lacking a measure of consistency, particularly against off-speed pitching. It was a shortcoming Trumbo was determined to correct.

It would appear that he has made great strides toward becoming the type of hitter that the Angels envisioned, based on what he accomplished this season in the California and Texas Leagues. Trumbo combined to hit 32 homers and drive in 93 runs (both tops in the organization). In addition, he appeared in 32 games for Double-A Arkansas and put up numbers that would have had him on a nearly identical pace to the one he set in Rancho Cucamonga. Trumbo hit .276 for the Travelers with six homers and 25 RBIs in 123 at-bats. That's a 100-RBI pace for an entire season.

"One of the things I've been working on for the last few seasons is being able to handle the breaking ball," said Trumbo, who is playing for Scottsdale in the Arizona Fall League. “If you watch any of our games out here, you'll see that I get a lot of them. I haven't gotten to where I want to get them yet, but working on it helped contribute to my higher [batting] average [a career high .281 during the regular season].”

During the playoffs as Arkansas won the Texas League title, Trumbo also hit .250 with a homer and four RBIs. He did contribute even if he only played there for a month, and is now having similar success with the Scorpions, hitting .263 with 13 RBIs through 80 at-bats. Moreover, it's likely that he will begin next season back in Arkansas though it would not be surprising to see him make his way up to the Pacific Coast League at some point. The suggestion brings a smile but Trumbo believes that there is still work to be done and that if he continues to improve, the rest will take care of itself.

Defense is one area of Trumbo's game that still needs to be addressed. He never played infield in high school so learning all the nuances of first base has been a sometimes-tedious process. His 20 errors were tops among Cal League first basemen, in spite spending a month in the Texas League. He committed two more errors at Arkansas.

"Defensively, I feel that if you look at the box scores at the number of errors it's not always indicative of what I'm capable of," Trumbo said. "The one knock on me has always been my defense, but I've worked a lot on it. I was a pitcher until I signed and in the last four years I've taken thousands of grounders. My range is coming around and I'm getting to balls I wouldn't have in the past."

In terms of pitching, don't look for Trumbo to move back to the mound anytime soon, if ever. According to him, his velocity is still about the same as it was -- mid-90s -- and that he 'messes around with it once in a while.' However, for the most part, it's something that he's been able to push out of his head.

"If I was hitting .220 and struggling and didn't have much to look forward to maybe," he said. "I've been able to put it out of my mind, though, and just concentrate on what I'm doing now."

The Angels of Anaheim advised Trumbo to be patient. According to the team, power hitters take a little longer to improve. This only proves that hard work will result to favorable outcome.
