Teixeira: Not what we expected

Over the past weeks of the season, the Angels of Anaheim has been working hard to earn victory for their fantastic games. But in sports, even if one played harder, it’s not just enough to achieve victory sometimes. Just like the Angels, the play could have gone down in history. It will likely be lost in the fog of time, instead. And it could be the last play Mark Teixeira makes as a member of the Angels. Teixeira With the winning run at second base, made a tremendous diving catch to his left on a vicious line drive by Mark Kotsay for the second out in the bottom of the ninth inning on Monday.

However, Jed Lowrie followed with a single through the right side, and Boston came away with a 3-2 victory in Game 4 of the American League Division Series to advance to the AL Championship Series and eliminate the Angels.

"That's baseball and part of the game," Teixeira said. "A bloop double and a seeing-eye single. Sometimes, that's the way the ball falls."

The victory of Boston ousted the Angels from the ALDS for the second time in as many seasons and the third time in five seasons. That's not what the Angels were expecting when they acquired Teixeira from the Braves on July 29 for first baseman Casey Kotchman and pitcher Steve Marek. The Halos already had a comfortable lead in the AL West, but they acquired Teixeira because they wanted to advance farther than they did last season. They wanted to go to the World Series.

"I wish I could have done more," Teixeira said.

Moreover, Teixeira admitted before the trade that he really never thought about playing for the Angels. And now, that has changed.

"It's an amazing organization," Teixeira said. "I have so much respect for everybody in this organization, from [owner] Arte Moreno down to the last guy on the bench. They've definitely given me something to think about."

"This [loss] is going to take a few days to get over," Teixeira said. "It wasn't supposed to end like this. I feel for the guys in this clubhouse. I didn't make any plans for Halloween. I definitely expected to be going until the end of October. I'll take a couple of days, and then I'll start figuring out where I'm going to play next year."

The Angels of Anaheim will still work hard for their future games, and the team believes that failure is a part of victory…the victory that they really deserve.
