Status of Leahy

Ryan Leahy got tickets from former minor league teammates Brandon Wood and Sean Rodriquez as the Angels of Anaheim were ousted by the team of Red Sox at Fenway Park in their American League Division Series a few weeks ago.

"I wore an Angels hat, but underneath my coat I wore a Red Sox T-shirt," Leahy said.

However, Leahy's days with the Angels may be numbered. He has no plans to retire, but at a planned August meeting with Angels farm director Abe Flores he learned that the team planned on releasing him after the World Series. The meeting was not totally bad for the Salem native, who is spending the offseason substitute teaching at Beverly High for the fifth straight year.

"What happens to me depends on a number of things, like possible injuries in spring training and openings," said Leahy. "Flores also talked to me about coaching. He (mentioned) the minor league staffs said I'd be a good candidate to coach at some point. At the same time, I was told to stay in shape in case they do call me back as a player."

"That thing about retirement comes up, but even if I am done it's not like I'm retiring from baseball because I never played. That's the big thing," he said.

"I'll never know how well I could have done with the bat because I never had more than 170 at bats (in one season). The average, everyday player will get between 400 to 450. I signed as a backup and remained a backup. I'm happy for someone like (San Diego Padres highly regarded prospect) Matt Antonelli (of Peabody). He got into the right organization; look how quick he moved up. It's also tough if you're a free agent. A lot of the prospects the Angels signed were for big money and they had to pay close attention to their investments."

In addition, according to Leahy, he’s not saying he got overlooked. “These guys are probably better than I was — or ever will be,” he added.

Meanwhile, Leahy has a dilemma. He would like to find a full-time job teaching locally, but is in limbo. He wants to teach for a career, perhaps become a teacher-coach in high school or a college coach. According to Leahy, he will have to wait this out for seven months.
