Kansas City Royals Information

The Kansas City Royals is an outstanding Major League Baseball team that started playing in 1969.  The team colors of Kansas City Royals include blue, white, and gold.  The team of Royals is a member of the Central Division of the American League.  The home stadium of the Royals is the Kauffman Stadium situated in Kansas City, Missouri, and was formerly known as the Royals Stadium.  The home stadium of the Royals was renamed in honor of the team’s owner, Ewing Kauffman, a month before his death in 1993.

The Royals was founded as an expansion team of the MLB, as the Kansas City Athletics moved to Oakland, California, after the 1967 season.  Through the first owner, Ewing Kauffman, the Royals derived its name from the American Royal Livestock Show, which has been an annual event in Kansas City, Missouri, since 1899.  The team of the Royals initially played in the Kansas City Municipal Stadium from 1969 to 1972.  In the Royals’ first season, the team defeated the Minnesota Twins in four games to three.  The Rookie of the Year Award was received by Lou Piniella, who was an outstanding player of the Royals.  The Kansas City Royals posted their career first season record of 69-93; a good record for an inaugural expansion team.  The triumphant venture of the Kansas City Royals flourished in the 1971 season when the team posted their first winning record of 85-76 and finished second place in the West Division.

By the year 1973, the Royals moved to the newly-built Royals Stadium and also hosted the All-Star Game.  The 1976 season was considered as one of the successful seasons of the Royals when they were able to win their first division title, with a record of 90 wins and 72 losses.  The Royals reached the 1976 American League Championship Series, but unfortunately lost to the New York Yankees by three games to two.  The Royals, by then, consistently won the division title from 1976-1978.  Though losing to the New York Yankees in the ALCS, the Royals had their best record of 102 wins and 60 losses in 1977, which is also considered as the best season in the franchise history.

The first trip of the Kansas City Royals to the World Series began in the season of 1980.  With a record of 97-65, the Royals acquired their 4th division title and defeated the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series, who swept them in three straight years.   In the 1980 ALCS, the Kansas City Royals defeated the New York Yankees with three games to one.  The first World Series match of the Royals made them lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in four games to two.

The major victory of the Kansas City Royals was reached by the team in the 1985 season.  With a record of 91 wins and 71 losses, the team advanced to the American League Championship Series and defeated the Toronto Blue Jays with a record of 4-3.  The Kansas City Royals triumphantly won the 1985 World Series over the St. Louis Cardinals.  During Game 1, the Cardinals defeated the Royals with a score of 3-1.  Game 2 gave the Cardinals a 4-2 win.  The Royals would gain some revenge winning Game 3 in St. Louis 6-1. However, the Cardinals bounced back to take Game 4, and the Royals faced another 3-1 deficit.  Game 6 would start out as a pitcher's duel between the Cardinals’ Danny Cox, and Charley Leibrandt; it would end as one of the most contentious games in World Series history. The game was scoreless until the Cardinals broke on top 1-0 in the 8th inning. The Game would go to the bottom of the 9th with Cardinals leading 1-0 and being just 3-outs from a Championship. Jorge Orta would lead the inning off by beating out an infield single despite replays showing he was out. The Royals would then capitalize after a single and a passed ball set up runners on 2nd and 3rd, as Dane Iorg hit a game winning single to force a decisive 7th game. Ironically, Orta would be erased on a fielder's choice and, despite the frustration of the St. Louis Cardinals, the umpire's mistake was only a small part of the Royals game-winning rally. With the Cardinals still frustrated over Game 6, the Royals would take full advantage and would romp to an 11-0 victory to claim their first ever World Championship.  The 1980s season of the Royals was led by Bo Jackson, George Brett, Bret Saberhagen, Mark Gubicza and Kevin Seitzer.

The Kansas City Royals is indeed an outstanding baseball team who gained one World Series title and seven division titles.  Moreover, the Kansas City Royals appeared six times in the American League Championship Series and obtained the title twice.  The Kansas City Royals tickets continue to sell out as fans continually support the Kansas City Royals team.
