Rodriguez and the Angels

Francisco Rodriguez has been one of the Angels aces. Due to the multiple injuries to the Angels of Anaheim bullpen, the club picked Rodriguez up during the middle of September. He emerged as a postseason relief hero on international television, winning five postseason games after never having won a Major League game before. And now, in the end, after saving more games than any reliever in Major League history, Francisco Rodriguez fought back the tears.

During the team’s final game of the season, they could not use their All-Star closer. K-Rod was just another stunned spectator Monday night as the Red Sox pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 3-2 win, which touched off another wild celebration at Fenway Park. In the midst of the madness, the Angels retreated quietly to their clubhouse. Together since mid-February in the Arizona sun, they were about to take flight to faraway places. And for K-Rod, with free agency staring him in the face, a winter of major decisions awaits.

"Our expectations were way high -- to win a world championship. Once again, we fell short. It's really disappointing. I'm about to cry. I don't know what to think. It's really frustrating. At the same time, you don't know what's going to happen to you. To leave the family you've known for so long . . . I don't know what to say. I don't know what to think. I don't know what to do."

Moreover, the team of the Angels will step forward first with an offer. It does not appear likely it will be accepted. Then others will present their offers, and Rodriguez will think about everything and see where his future lies. As magnificent as his season was with his record 62 saves and a third All-Star Game selection, Rodriguez had another disappointing October. He appeared in two of the four American League Division Series games, absorbing one of the losses. He yielded two earned runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings.

"I would love to stay here," Rodriguez said. “This has been my family for 10 years, the only people I know. I grew up in the organization. People think it's my decision; it's not. I want to stay here for many years, but I don't know what will happen. They have some big decisions to make. I don't know what they're going to do. I'm only one of six, seven guys who are going to go free agency [from the Angels roster].”

According to Rodriguez, they were built to win this year. And he’s pretty sure they're going to make big changes.

“Hopefully, next year they'll put together a ballclub to go where we need to go.”

Rodriguez believes that the Angels of Anaheim is an outstanding team. He learned a lot from the team and whatever happens, K-Rod will always be a part of the history of the Angels of Anaheim.
