Pettit's Success

As the offseason continues, the Angels of Anaheim also continues to plan for the status of their players. Chris Pettit, a prospect of the Angels was selected by the team during the 19th round (582nd overall) of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of Loyola Marymount University as a senior. Pettit was awarded as the Arizona Fall League hitter of the week.

The Arizona Fall League has been exciting as the Scottsdale Scorpions defeated the Surprise Rafters by 7-3, Monday. Kevin Pucetas, a top Giants prospect, had a perfect game into the fourth inning before surrendering a leadoff double to Julio Borbon. Wes Hodges lofted a sacrifice fly to right to score Borbon.

"The one run I gave up, I thought I could have executed a little better. It was a 3-2 slider to Hodges. I was kind of upset about that, I thought I could have made a better pitch to get out of there," said Pucetas. "But he's a great hitter, fellow Futures Game guy and top prospect, so he did what he knows how to do and he did a good job."

On the other hand, Pettit also was outstanding during the game. Pettit lined an RBI double in the third inning and raised his average to .377. In addition, he went 3-for-4 and slugged a solo homer in the sixth inning off Rafters reliever Gilbert de la Vara.

"I've been feeling comfortable. I'm putting good swings on good pitches and not chasing balls out of the zone," said Pettit, who ripped a de la Vara fastball for his third homer of the fall. "I'm being more selective."

"I'm trying to be as consistent as possible and take good at-bats," said Pettit.

The team of Scorpions scored twice in the third and sixth innings before tacking on three runs in the eighth inning. Moreover, Pucetas and the Scorpions went up against Brian Matusz, the fourth overall pick in June by Baltimore. The Arizona native struck out five, but allowed two runs on three hits and a walk over four innings for his third loss. "I faced him a few times before in college, and he looked pretty good," said Pettit. "He can command all three or four pitches. He throws a good changeup -- he struck me out on a good curve -- so he looked pretty good." Pucetas also believes it would be a tough game against the University of San Diego ace. According to Pucetas, one got to do whatever it takes, the players were great and the Scorpions were lucky enough to win the game.

Through the AFL, the prospects’ skills are refined and they were able to perform in game settings in front of major and minor league baseball scouts as well as team executives.
