    Peavy with the Angels
    10/22/2008

The fans of Jake Peavy are eager to know if he will be joining the Angels of Anaheim. Although it makes a lot of sense for both parties, the Angels team has yet to be mentioned as a serious landing spot for Padres’ ace Jake Peavy. The Padres are in trade discussions with several clubs concerning the availability of their stud pitcher, but the list apparently doesn’t include the Angels. In the wake of a brutal 99-loss season, Padres’ management appears desperate to flip their ace for a bundle of talented young players, and to trim payroll. Peavy has a no-trade clause, but has told San Diego he would approve a trade to five National League teams, which are the Braves, Cardinals, Dodgers, Astros and Cubs. The team of the Braves appears the favorite to land Peavy based on his affection for the team while growing up in Alabama. Atlanta apparently has a stable of prospects to get the deal done. However, the fact that Angel Stadium is only 95 miles north of PETCO Park might entice Peavy to rethink his NL bias. Peavy lives north of San Diego with his wife and three kids and would likely prefer to remain in Southern California. Thus, playing in Anaheim makes a lot of sense, despite the pitcher’s reluctance to jump leagues. A few extra million from Arte Moreno’s vault might change his mind. Peavy’s agent, Barry Axelrod, acknowledged that the Angels would be the one American League club that would draw extra consideration. Axelrod mentioned Peavy’s “comfort level” in the NL, which is code for an unwillingness to pitch to in a league that employs the designated hitter. If a potential trade with the Braves fails, Peavy might realize that going to a winning organization like the Angels as opposed to staying with the moribund Padres is a promising alternative—even if it means pitching against David Ortiz and Jim Thome.

Moreover, the Angels appear to be the perfect trading partner, from the Padres’ perspective. In fact, with youngsters the likes of Jered Weaver, Kevin Jespen and Jason Bulger on hand, the Angels have the kind of young pitching talent that could send a tingle up the leg of Padres General Manager Kevin Towers. Towers has stated a preference for talented young pitchers, followed by middle infielders. Towers’ past trading history shows him hording young pitching at every opportunity. For example, with his Padres in the think of a pennant race in the summer of 2007, Towers sent negative reverberations through the Padres’ locker room by jettisoning popular and talented set-up man Scott Linebrink to Milwaukee for three untested pitchers—Joe Thatcher, Steve Garrison and Will Inman. Some may wonder why the Angels should jump into the Peavy sweepstakes with major concerns such as free agents Mark Teixeira and Francisco Rodriguez, and with an already strong starting rotation. It is probably because rarely does a 27-year-old pitcher the caliber of Peavy become available on the trade market. And it’s unheard of to have a former Cy Young winner available who’s under contract for the next four seasons with a club option for a fifth year. However, there are some red flags that might dissuade the Halos and other franchises from pursuing Peavy. Peavy’s detractors point to the imbalance between his numbers at PETCO’s pitcher paradise versus his road numbers. He has a career ERA of 2.77 at PETCO and Qualcomm Stadium; on the road it jumps to 3.80. The difference was even more demonstrative last season: 1.74 at home; 4.28 on the road. Peavy served a stint on the disabled list in 2008 with a strained muscle in his throwing elbow. He did, however, come back strong from the injury.

In the end, teams with oodles of dough and a need for pitching will ignore the discrepancy in Peavy’s home/road numbers and injury concerns. Whether the Angels decide to jump into the bidding process is up in the air, but a package of Howie Kendrick, Jespen and additional pitching would likely seal the deal. Let us find out what will be the fate of Jake Peavy in MLB, if the Angels of Anaheim would let him join the team, Peavy will surely work outstandingly with the Angels.
