Brad Penny and Jeff Kent have been a part of the LA Dodgers team. However, their careers with the team might have come to an end.

Brad Penny, a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball, was bought out of his contract by the LA Dodgers on Wednesday for $2 million and is eligible to file for free agency. By 2004, Penny was traded together with Hee-Seop Choi and Bill Murphy to the LA Dodgers in exchange for Guillermo Mota, Juan Encarnacion and Paul Lo Duca. The Dodgers could have kept Penny by exercising an option for $9.25 million, but the team decided to cut him loose after a season wherein he went 6-9 with a 6.27 ERA and spent three stints on the disabled list with lingering shoulder problems. According to general manager Ned Colletti, Penny was a key member of the club in 2007. His status of getting hurt and not being able to come back for the last three months of the season pushed the club to decline his option year.

“We wish him the best and hope that he continues to be a good pitcher,” said Ned Colletti.

Colletti believes that Penny is a talented player. Penny had a strong start to 2007 that continued throughout the season, with an ERA of 3.03 for the season and was the first Dodger pitcher to start out with a 12-1 record since Phil Regan went 14-1 in 1966. Penny was also selected to the All-Star game for a second consecutive year.

“I sense that if he had been able to match '07 in '08, it would've given the club a better chance,” said Colletti.

The free-agent filing of Derek Lowe and the probable exit of Penny leave the Dodgers without their top two starters; however, it was a nice move for a run at the premier pitcher on this year's free-agent market, CC Sabathia.

Furthermore, Jeff Kent also filed for free agency. He is now 40 and unlikely for any role other than designated hitter or pinch-hitter. By 2004, Jeff Kent signed a $21 million contract for 3 years with the Dodgers. He had a good 2005 season leading the team in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging, runs, hits, doubles, home runs and RBI. He became the team's 12th free agent this offseason. He completed his fourth season with Los Angeles, hitting .280 with 12 homers and 58 RBIs, his lowest production in more than a decade. Kent ranks 62nd on the all-time home run list with 377 and 47th on the all-time RBI list with 1,518. Kent missed most of the last month of the season with knee surgery and rushed back in three weeks, only to lose his starting second-base job to Blake DeWitt, Kent being relegated to a pinch-hitting role in the playoffs.

The LA Dodgers will continue to fulfill the needs of the team as the offseason continues. The fans of the Dodgers believe that the team will have a fresh new season.
