Maddux Possibilities

Scott Boras, the agent of Maddux, told the media about the possibility of Maddux’s retirement at the end of the postseason. Maddux has been a fantastic player as he won the Cy Young Award for four consecutive years.
Maddux, whose contract for this season was worth $10 million, has filed for free agency joining the 11 Dodgers players and the retirement is not formal yet as there were no retirement papers filed as of the moment. At 42, Maddux would finish his 23-year career with a 355-227 record and a 3.16 ERA. He was 11-14 in 35 postseason games, including 30 starts, for the teams of Braves, Cubs and Dodgers. In addition, he is known for his pinpoint accuracy, and his ability to outwit hitters. The speed of his pitches was never his strong suit, and has decreased with time, but Maddux's location has been peerless. Maddux is considered an excellent fielding pitcher. He has won 18 Gold Gloves, the all time record for any position. Of his 18 total awards, Maddux won 10 with the Braves, five with the Cubs, two with the Dodgers and one with the Padres. He has also been a reliable hitting pitcher, with a career .172 batting average including four seasons batting .200 or better. Maddux’s last big league appearance could very well have been in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series as he pitched the fourth and fifth innings in a 5-1 defeat to the Phillies, allowing no runs and two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
According to Manager Ned Colletti, Maddux will be welcomed back to the LA Dodgers for the 2009 season if he does not follow through on his intention to retire. "That's what Scott said and that's what Greg told us at the end," Colletti said. "Let Greg take the winter and let him figure out what he's going to do. It's not like if we don't get something finished by today we're done. That's not what we told him."
Colletti knew Maddux back in 1986 when Maddux had his first tour with the Cubs while Colletti worked in both the media relations department and baseball operations. Colletti respects Maddux and knows what an impact he has on a club and a franchise.
However, according to Boras Tuesday, Maddux probably won’t be back. "I talked to Greg at the end of the season, and he said at this point, his intentions are not to play next year," Boras said. Scott Boras is also the agent of Manny Ramirez, Andruw Jones and Derek Lowe.
Greg Maddux will be a help for the LA Dodgers if he won’t retire. However, whether he will play with the Dodgers or not, the team will still continue to look for outstanding players like Greg Maddux. The fantastic team will continue to look forward for a great 2009 season.
