Furcal as Free Agent

Rafael Furcal is an outstanding shortstop who made his Major League debut on April 4, 2000 versus the Colorado Rockies. In 1996, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Braves. By then, Furcal was a valued leadoff hitter due to his speed and ability to get on base. He was regarded as one of the best base stealers in baseball. He is an accomplished bunter, once bunting the ball past Robin Ventura for a double in 2001. Furcal has one of the strongest throwing arms in the league and is known for spectacular defensive plays mixed with occasional mental lapses on easy plays. By 2005, he signed a free agent contract with the LA Dodgers for three years and $39 million. In 2007, he became one of the only five Major League players to get 4 hits in 3 consecutive games. As the best start in his career, he posted a .381 batting average in 2008.
However, Furcal filed for free agency on Monday, despite the fact that both parties are carefully positive that he will re-sign with the team of Dodgers. As Furcal is attempting to secure more than one guaranteed season, his strength is a key issue in negotiations; he overachieved when he was healthy. That was only about two-thirds of the time as he played in 333 of a possible 486 games. Due to a back injury that required surgery, Furcal missed all but the first month, the last week and the postseason this year. Moreover, he was given a clean bill of health from Dr. Robert Watkins, his back surgeon, and he started throughout the playoffs after missing five months.
Furcal worked hard during the National League Division Series versus the Cubs but he struggled in the National League Championship Series versus Philadelphia as he hit .211 and committed four errors. He was troubled by a stiff neck in three in one inning of the deciding Game 5.
Among the players who was joined by Furcal on the free agents list included Derek Lowe, Casey Blake, Joe Beimel, Nomar Garciaparra, Greg Maddux, Jason Johnson, Chan Ho Park, Manny Ramirez, and Mark Sweeney. If the team of the Dodgers doesn’t exercise options this week, Gary Bennett as well as Brad Penny would be eligible to file. In addition, Jeff Kent and Pablo Ozuna are still eligible but not filed.
Furcal is looking forward to re-sign with the LA Dodgers as the season ended. However, the division rival San Francisco Giants, Detroit Tigers and the Cubs are the clubs that show interest in signing Furcal. The Cubs thought they had the best shot at Furcal three years ago as the Dodgers made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
